Stonehill Dealt Tough Loss In Home Opener

American International wins in five sets; 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-15

EASTON, Mass. (September 17, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team forced a fifth set after falling behind 2-1, only to lose to visiting American International College, 3-2, tonight at Merkert Gym in the Skyhawks 2013 home opener.

Sophomore outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) led the offensive attack for Stonehill, recording a team-leading 16 kills to go with 13 digs. Junior Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) had a strong overall game for the Skyhawks, hitting .333 with 13 kills, seven blocks, and three digs. Junior Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) led all players with 50 assists, and also contributed 11 digs, two kills, and two service aces.

American International was led by Melanie Garcia (Wallington, N.J./North Broward Prep) and Bailey Swan (Belvidere, Ill./Rockford Lutheran), who combined for 43 of the Yellow Jackets 62 kills. Garcia (14) and Swan (10) both had double-digit digs, as well.

Stonehill (4-4, 1-1 NE-10) is back in action this weekend at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, Mass. The Skyhawks will take on East Stroudsberg University and Nyack College on Saturday, and Georgian Court University on Sunday. Stonehill returns home next Tuesday, as Saint Anselm visits Merkert Gym for the 2013 Purple & White Game. American International (5-4, 1-0 NE-10) opens up a five-match homestand on Saturday against East Stroudsberg in the Yellow Jacket Invitational.
