Stonehill Loses Opener At RAM Fest To Shippensburg, 3-0

Skyhawks swept 3-0 by scores of 20-25, 16-25, 22-25

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (September 13, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team dropped its opening match at the RAM Fest tonight, falling to Shippensburg (Pa.) University, 3-0 (20-25, 16-25, 22-25).

Stonehill senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) recorded seven kills and seven digs, while sophomore Delia Phillips (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) added eight kills. The Skyhawks hit .010 as a team in the three set loss.

Stonehill held a 16-15 advantage in the opening set before giving up five consecutive points and allowing Shippensburg to take control of the match. The Raiders never trailed in the second set, taking a quick 2-0 set lead. Stonehill led late in the third set, 22-18, but Shippensburg won the next seven points to take the match.

Shippensburg, a 2012 Division II NCAA Tournament participant, was led by freshman setter Maura Nolan (Wexford/North Allegheny), who tallied 28 assists, seven digs, four kills, and a match-high .571 hitting percentage. Senior Jill Edwards (Raleigh, N.C./Panther Creek) added 13 kills and six digs for the Raiders.

Stonehill (2-3, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow with two more matches at the RAM Fest. The Skyhawks take on Chestnut Hill College at noon, followed by the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia at 4 p.m. The Skyhawks will play their first home match next Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. against American International College in Northeast-10 competition. Shippensburg (4-0, 0-0 PSAC) will play two matches tomorrow as well, facing Glenville State College at 10 a.m. and Assumption College at 2 p.m.
