Stevens, Arvidson lead the way in Northeast-10 opener

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 10, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team opened up its 2013 Northeast-10 slate tonight with a win, defeating Assumption College 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, 15-7 at Laska Gymnasium. The match-up pitted Assumption first-year head coach Maureen Atkins against her former mentor, as Atkins served as an assistant at Stonehill from 2010-2012 under Skyhawks coach Lauren Amundson.

Freshman setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) had another strong showing for the Skyhawks, recording her second career double-double with 41 assists and 13 digs while hitting .429 in the five-set win. She also contributed five service aces and three kills for Stonehill. Stevens was named both NE-10 Rookie of the Week and NE-10 Setter of the Week earlier today for her performance in last weekend's Charger Invitational.

Skyhawks sophomore Delia Phillips (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) led Stonehill with 15 kills and added nine digs, while senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover)  recorded 14 kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Senior Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) had a team-high 27 digs, and senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) pitched in with a double-double of ten kills and 11 digs.

Assumption was paced offensively by sophomore Tara Reilly (Naples, Fla./Northport) and junior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass./Braintree), who had nine and ten kills, respectively, while senior Mary Johnston (Pearland, Texas/Glenda Dawson) led the Greyhounds with 17 digs.

Stonehill nearly let the match slip away after dropping the third and fourth sets, but the Skyhawks regrouped, hitting .476 in the final set to earn the victory.

Stonehill (2-2, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action with three matches this weekend at the RAM Fest, a tournament hosted by West Chester (Pa.) University. The Skyhawks home opener is slated for next Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. against American International College. Assumption (1-2, 0-1 NE-10) will also be participating in the RAM Fest this weekend, before returning to NE-10 play on September 17th at Southern New Hampshire University.
