Skyhawks receive four double-digit kill efforts in loss to Setters

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (October 26, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Pace University by scores of 31-29, 24-26, 19-25 and 17-25 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Friday night at the Goldstein Fitness Center.

Juniors Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) and Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) tied for the team-high in kills with 15 to lead four players who recorded double-digits in putaways on the night. Maxey collected her fifth double-double of the season on 15 kills (.282 hitting percentage), ten digs and two block assists. Arvidson had 15 putaways, three block assists and one dig while freshman outside hitter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) had 11 kills and eight digs. Sophomore middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) registered ten kills and five block assists.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) facilitated the offense with a match-high 55 assists, 13 digs, two block assists and two kills. Iverson pushes her double-double streak to five consecutive matches and currently leads the team with 13 double-doubles overall.

Defensively, senior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) led all players in digs with 29 total. Junior defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) chipped in with 11 digs.

Freshman outside hitter Megan Kurz (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry) guided the Setters to their sixth-straight win with a match-high 24 kills (.380 hitting percentage), 13 digs, three blocks (one solo) and two assists. Sophomore setter Brooke Speyerer (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) tallied 37 assists, 15 digs, four blocks (one solo), four kills and one service ace. Senior libero Elyse Rowland (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) notched 22 digs, six assists and one service ace.

Stonehill took set one 31-29 as the Skyhawks combined for 24 kills and their highest hitting percentage in four sets (.298). Maxey registered eight kills, Arvidson had six and Weymouth deposited five putaways to pace the attack. Set one saw 13 ties and six lead changes before Stonehill finally took the game on a Maxey kill at 30-29 followed by an attacking error from the Setters to wrap up set one.

Tied up at 24-24 in set two, the Skyhawks left a chance to go up 2-0 on the floor as two errors, one ball-handling and one attacking error, lifted Pace to a 26-24 victory in game two. The Setters never trailed in set three after a Kurz kill pushed the hosts ahead 13-12. Set four featured Pace's most efficient offense of the match as the Setters compiled a .242 hitting percentage on 13 kills, five errors and 33 total attacks. Kurz led all players in game four with six kills and two digs.

Stonehill (12-11, 6-5 NE-10) travels to Adelphi University tomorrow for an NE-10 matchup scheduled for 1 p.m. Pace (13-14, 7-3 NE-10) visits Dowling tomorrow at 3 p.m.
