Stonehill Sweeps Southern Connecticut State

Phillips records first career double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 30, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team downed Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0, by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 27-25 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Sunday afternoon at Pelz Gymnasium.

Freshman outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and junior outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) both posted double-doubles to highlight the Skyhawks offensive efforts on the road. Phillips notched 13 kills and 13 digs to record her first career double-double in a Stonehill uniform while Maxey tied for the match-high in kills with 13 alongside ten digs and three block assists.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) ran the offense compiling a match-high 38 assists, 15 digs, one service ace and one block assist. Iverson has tallied five-straight double-doubles this season (Sept. 18 - Sept. 30) and now has 16 total in her career.

Senior captain and libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) guided the defense supplying a match-high and season-high 25 digs in addition to four assists.

For the Owls, junior outside hitter Jade Black (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) hammered home a team-high nine kills, 17 digs and two block assists. Classmate Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) contributed eight kills, seven digs and two block assists.

Senior setter Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) dished out 22 assists, seven digs and two kills while Vanessa Sullivan (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) had a team-high 19 digs.

Stonehill's defense was the difference against Southern Connecticut State University as the Skyhawks collected a season-high 79 digs on the afternoon and eight team blocks (14 block assists). Stonehill held off the Owls in set three, 27-25, with a match-high 30-dig performance in the game spearheaded by Phillips (eight digs), Kelly (seven digs) and Iverson (seven digs).

Overall in the sweep, the Skyhawks held their opposition to a season-low .036 hitting percentage on 28 kills, 23 errors and 140 attacks total. Stonehill also posted a .328 receptions-to-kills percentage (26-for-64) in the contest.

Stonehill (8-6, 3-2 NE-10) hosts New York Institute of Technology on Friday, October 5 at 5:00 p.m. in Merkert Gymnasium on "Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night." Southern Connecticut State (14-4, 2-2 NE-10) travels to the University of New Haven on Tuesday, October 2 for a 7 p.m. match.
