Stonehill Bounces Back Against Saint Michael’s, 3-0

Iverson records double-double, Arvidson and Lee notch 13 kills each in win

Junior Kirsten Arvidson turned in 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the Skyhawks.

EASTON, Mass. (September 29, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team swept Saint Michael's College, 3-0, by scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 26-24 on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action at Merkert Gymnasium.

Junior right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) and sophomore middle blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) recorded 13 kills each to help the Skyhawks end their three-match losing streak. Arvidson also posted a .333 hitting percentage and three block assists while Lee hit .550, had two digs and two block assists.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) compiled her fourth-straight double-double of the season with match-highs in assists (39) and digs (15). Sophomore middle hitter Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) contributed nine kills, two digs and five blocks (one solo).

Defensively, senior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) had 14 digs and junior outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) tallied seven digs in addition to three kills and one service ace. Classmate Rachel Sperando (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) turned in five kills, five digs and one block assist.

Junior middle hitter Chelsea Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) led the Purple Knights attack with 12 kills (.435 hitting percentage), two digs and one block solo. Senior outside hitter Katie Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I./The Prout School) collected 11 kills and nine digs while junior setter Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) facilitated the offense with 30 assists, seven digs and two kills. Senior libero Courtney Dunne (Hopkinton, Mass./Bancroft School) supplied a team-high 11 digs from the back row.

Set one saw ten ties and seven leads changes before Stonehill came out on top with a 25-22 win due in large part to a game-high seven kills on eight attempts (no errors) from Lee. The Skyhawks broke a 22-22 tie to claim a 1-0 lead in the match on a Purple Knights attacking error and back-to-back kills from Arvidson and Catton.

Stonehill took control of set two using a match-high .571 hitting percentage and seven putaways from Arvidson to claim the 25-12 triumph. Defensively, the Skyhawks recorded 12 digs (six by Iverson) and three blocks to hold the Purple Knights to their lowest hitting percentage (.100) in any set on the afternoon.

Saint Michael's held an early 10-3 advantage in set three but allowed Stonehill to chip away at the deficit and eventually take the game, 26-24. Arvidson hammered home five kills and Catton had four putaways to pace the offense. Junior defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington), who had four digs, capped the come-from-behind victory for the Skyhawks with her only service ace of the match at set-point.

Stonehill (7-6, 2-2 NE-10) travels to Southern Connecticut State University for an NE-10 clash at 1 p.m. Saint Michael's (7-5, 0-2 NE-10) hosts Merrimack College in league play on Tuesday, October 2 at 7p.m.
