St. Anselm Rallies Past Stonehill, 3-1

Skyhawks four-game winning streak snapped

Junior Kirsten Arvidson posted 13 kills to lead the Skyhawks offense.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 18, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team's four-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night as the Saint Anselm College Hawks defeated the Skyhawks, 3-1, by scores of 25-16, 25-27, 25-27 and 19-25 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action at Stoutenburgh Gym.

Junior right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) led Stonehill offensively with 13 kills, two block assists and one dig. Sophomore Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added 12 kills, one assist, three digs and three blocks (one solo).

Sophomore Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) posted her second double-double of the season with 44 assists, 11 digs, one kill and one block assist. Freshman Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) chipped in with nine kills and 11 digs.

Senior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) guided Stonehill defensively with a team-leading 17 digs while junior outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) had 13 digs and eight kills.

For Saint Anselm, junior outside hitter Kyla Gustavson (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) contributed a match-high 13 kills to go along with ten digs. Sophomore setter Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) dished out a match-high 48 assists, had four kills, four digs and one service ace.

Senior defensive specialist Margeret Tereschuk (Mission Viejo, Calif./Laguna Hills) led all players in digs with 21 total.

Stonehill raced out to an early 1-0 lead after set one due in large part to Weymouth's play. The freshman outside hitter held serve for eight-straight points to give the Skyhawks an 18-6 cushion midway through set one and recorded six putaways, seven digs and one service ace total in the frame.

After narrowly defeating Stonehill in set two (27-25), Saint Anselm carried that momentum into set three as the Hawks compiled set-highs in kills (20) and hitting percentage (.356) to claim another 27-25 victory. Sophomore middle hitter Melissa Ouelett (Salem, N.H./Salem) supplied a team-leading seven kills on eight attempts for Saint Anselm in set three.

The Hawks closed out the match with a .286 hitting percentage in set four to snap the Skyhawks four-game winning streak. Overall, Saint Anselm notched 55 kills (.170 hitting percentage), 53 assists, four service aces, 75 digs and five team blocks (ten block assists). Stonehill had 53 kills (.162 hitting percentage), 51 assists, five service aces, 72 digs and six team blocks (one solo, ten assist).

Stonehill (6-4, 1-1 NE-10) travels to American International College on Friday, September 21 for an NE-10 matchup at 4 p.m. Saint Anselm (5-4, 1-0 NE-10) visits the University of New Haven on Tuesday, September 25 at 7 p.m.
