Stonehill Wraps Up Bentley Invitational With Sweep

Kelly records 1,000th career dig versus Queens (N.Y.) College; Arvidson named tournament Co-MVP

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 15, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team closed out day two of the Bentley University Invitational with a pair of wins. The Skyhawks, who went 3-0 overall at the tournament, defeated Wilmington (Del.) University, 3-2, by scores of 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18, 17-15 and Queens (N.Y.) College, 3-1, by scores of 26-24, 18-25, 25-13 and 28-26 at the Dana Center.

Senior captain and libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) highlighted the invitational as she recorded her 1,000th career dig in the second match of the day against Queens (N.Y.) College.

Kelly, who entered the two day invitational with 962 career digs, compiled 12 digs versus Georgian Court University on Friday, 17 more against Wilmington (Del.) University and another 18 digs versus Queens (N.Y.) College to give her 1,009 career digs (3.10 per set) and Bentley University Invitational All-Tournament Team honors.

Kelly is the second Stonehill player in as many years to record 1,000 career digs as Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) notched her 1,000th career dig versus Saint Michael's College on September 24, 2011.

Sophomore middle blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and juniors Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) and Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) led the attack as all three players recorded ten or more kills. Lee posted a team-high 14 kills while Maxey and Arvidson each had ten.

Sophomore setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) facilitated the offense with a match-high 44 assists, two kills, one service ace,  one block solo and seven digs. Kelly, along with her 17 digs, also added five assists and three service aces while junior defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) had 15 digs and two service aces.

Stonehill hit .198 in the contest, totaled 59 kills, ten service aces, 53 digs and ten team blocks (14 block assists). Wilmington posted a .263 hitting percentage, 54 kills, eight service aces, 66 digs and eight team blocks (five solo, six assists).

Arvidson supplied most of the offense in match two as the right-side hitter tallied 20 putaways for a solid .436 hitting percentage on 39 total attacks (three errors). For her efforts in the invitational, Arvidson was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second-straight season and was also named the Co-Most Valuable Player of the Bentley University Invitational.

Iverson dished out 35 assists, registered four kills, six digs and one block assist while Lee finished second on the team with eight kills.

Freshman outside hitter/setter Kelsey Weymouth (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) had seven kills and nine digs to aid the Skyhawks. Kelly's 18 digs tied a match-high while Maxey tied Weymouth for the second in digs on the team with nine.

Stonehill notched a .197 hitting percentage, five service aces, 48 digs and three team blocks (four block assists). Queens finished with 48 kills for a .273 hitting percentage, 39 assists, two service aces, 60 digs and 5.5 team blocks (three block assists).

Stonehill (6-3, 1-0 NE-10) travels to Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, September 18 for an NE-10 clash at 7:30 p.m.
