Stonehill Rallies Past Southern Connecticut, 3-2, On Senior Day

Skyhawks remain undefeated at Merkert Gymnasium

EASTON, Mass. (November 5, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team claimed a come-from-behind victory over Southern Connecticut State University, 3-2, by scores of 21-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 15-9 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium on Senior Day.

Before the match, seniors Colleen Burt (Pensacola, Fla./Pine Forest) and Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield)  were honored for their contributions towards the Stonehill women's volleyball program.

Freshman middle blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led all players in kills posting 16 on 30 swings (16-4-30) for a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) notched her 16th double-double of the season compiling 12 kills and 16 digs. Classmate right-side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) added 13 kills, three digs and one block assist.

Freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dished out a match-high 47 assists, had 12 digs, six kills, one service ace and one block assist while junior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) and sophomore defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) tied Maxey for the match-high in digs with 16 on the afternoon.

For Southern Connecticut, senior Megan Hiss (Trinidad, Colo./Hoehne/Adams State) contributed a team-high 13 kills and 14 digs while sophomore middle blocker Sarah Beres (Ellington, Conn./Ellington) added 12 kills, three service aces, two digs and two blocks (one solo). Senior outside hitter Megan Lyons (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) contributed 10 kills and 10 digs.

Junior setter Kimberly Lachowicz (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) handed out 39 assists, tallied 10 digs, one kill, one service ace and one block assist.

Tied 12-12 in set three with the Owls up 2-0 in the match, Stonehill went on an 8-1 run as Lee and Huselton combined for four kills to push the score to 20-13 and the eventual win.

Huselton finished with seven kills on the afternoon putting the senior outside hitter seven kills away from the 1,000 career mark.

In set four, the Skyhawks put down a set-high 17 kills for a .500 hitting percentage (17-3-28) with Lee and Maxey leading the way with four kills apiece.

Tied 6-6 in the final set, Lee tallied four kills including three in a row, all set up by Iverson, to push Stonehill ahead 11-7. Maxey closed out the contest notching three kills including the final two of the match to keep the Skyhawks perfect at home this season with an 11-0 record at Merkert Gymnasium.

Stonehill (26-5, 14-1 NE-10) will host Southern Connecticut (19-10, 8-7 NE-10) on Tuesday, November 8 in NE-10 Quarterfinal round action at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks have a chance to tie the program record for most wins in a season which was set in 1996 (27-8).
