Skyhawks Drop Two In Tri-Match At New Haven

Stonehill falls to New Haven in match one, 3-1, and Shippensburg, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (October 29, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon at the University of New Haven. The Skyhawks fell to the Chargers, 3-2, in match one by scores of 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-21, 10-15 and 3-0 against Shippensburg University by scores 14-25, 19-25 and 20-25 in match two.

New Haven 3, Stonehill 2

NE-10 Player of the Week and junior outside hitter Keidy Candelaria (Vega Baja, Puerto Rice/Bayamon Military Academy) notched a double-double with a match-high 23 kills and 13 digs to lead the Chargers. Senior setter Chelsey Alpough (Torrance, Calif./South/Western New Mexico Univ.) facilitated the offense with 50 assists to go along with two kills, 13 digs and six block assists.

Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gordon) and Elizabeth Akibiyi (Denver, Colo./Denver East) combined for 21 kills while Cannady also added a match-high 13 blocks (three solo).

For Stonehill, sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) paced the Skyhawks offensively with a team-high 17 kills, 11 digs and one block assist. Senior outside hitter Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) contributed a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while freshman middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) had 11 kills.

NE-10 Rookie and Setter of the Week Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dished out a match-high 55 assists, five digs and two kills. Sophomore right side hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) chipped in with 14 kills and two block assists while junior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) notched a match-high 17 digs.

New Haven has never lost a regular season conference match since joining the NE-10 in 2008 compiling a 57-0 record during that span.

Shippensburg 3, Stonehill 0

Sophomore outside hitter Jill Edwards (Raleigh, N.C./Panther Creek) led all players with 17 kills for a .419 hitting percentage (17-4-31), three digs and four block assists. Junior setter Andrea Heimsoth (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) enginereed the offense with a match-high 28 assists, four kills, one service ace, nine digs and two block assists. Senior middle blocker Libby Woffindin (York, Pa./Central York) added six kills, four service aces and five block assists.

For Stonehill, sophomore outside hitter Rachel Sperando (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) notched a team-high six kills, two service aces and two digs while Catton and Huselton combined for 10 kills apiece (five each). Iverson handed out 18 assists, one service ace, four digs and one block assist.

Stonehill (24-5, 12-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday, November 1 against UMass Lowell in NE-10 action on "Orange Night" to promote Leukemia & Lymphoma Awareness, in memory of Henry Thevenin, '14 at 7 p.m. at Merkert Gymnasium.
