Skyhawks Fly By Adelphi In Straight Sets, 3-0

Stonehill runs winning streak to five-straight matches

EASTON, Mass. (October 21, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team pushed its winning streak to five-straight matches with a 3-0 victory over Adelphi University by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-14 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Friday night at Merkert Gymnasium on Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend.

Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) notched a match-high 12 kills for a .476 hitting percentage (12-2-21) to lead the offense while junior libero Erin Kelly (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) guided the Skyhawks defensively with a match-high 18 digs.

NE-10 Rookie and Setter of the Week Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) piloted the offense with a match-high 37 assists and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added 10 kills, one assist, five digs and one block assist while freshman middle blocker Meaghan Lee (Hanover, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) contributed 10 kills and three block assists.

For Adelphi, junior middle blocker/right-side hitter Samantha Rico (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Vandermeulen) posted a .556 hitting percentage on six kills (team-high). Junior outside hitter Chelsea Overholt (Centrevilla, Va./Flint Hill School) compiled five kills and a team-high 13 digs while sophomore setter Katie Bryson (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) initiated the Panthers attack with 21 assists.

A balanced attack led Stonehill in set one as Huselton, freshman middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) and Lee all had three kills to along with four from Maxey, who led the Skyhawks in the set.

In set two tied 20-20, Lee notched two of her set leading five kills down the stretch including set point to secure the 25-22 victory.

The Skyhawks carried their momentum into set three racing out to a 19-9 lead capped by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) – her fourth and final tally of the night – and never looked back. Huselton also added two kills late in the set to complete the sweep of the Panthers.

Stonehill (22-3, 10-0 NE-10) hosts Pace University on Saturday, October 22 at 1 p.m. on day two of Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend. Adelphi (13-7, 6-3 NE-10) travels to Bentley University tomorrow for a NE-10 matchup starting at 2 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to tomorrow's match in recognition of the event. The Skyhawks goal is to raise $500 dollars over the weekend to help the fight against breast cancer. Fans can contribute a flat donation or can enter a raffle to win mini-pink Molten volleyballs signed by the team.
