Skyhawks Push Winning Streak To Seven

EASTON, Mass. (September 13, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches as the Skyhawks posted a 3-1 triumph over Saint Anselm by scores of 25-16, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-21 in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Tuesday night at Merkert Gymnasium.

Stonehill's seven-match winning streak surpasses its longest run since 2008 when the Skyhawks rattled off six-straight from August 29 to September 6, all non-conference wins.

Newly minted NE-10 Player of the Week and sophomore outside hitter Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) combined with classmate Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) to lead the offense with 14 kills each. Maxey also added one assist, two service aces, one block solo and a match-high 19 digs while Arvidson chipped in with six block assists.

Freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York), who was dubbed the NE-10 Rookie of the Week, set up the offense with 35 assists and added three kills, one service ace and 16 digs.

For the Hawks, Charlotte Tencza (Greenfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) led the team with 12 kills, two assists and 11 digs. Lauren Ross (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) finished with 11 kills while Melissa Jewett (Newton, Mass./Newton North) had 17 digs and Natalie Steinwart (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) dished out 35 assists.

In the first set ahead 19-14, the Skyhawks used a 6-2 run to close out the first contest getting a pair of kills from Arvidson down the stretch to go up 1-0 in the match.

Saint Anselm capitalized on Stonehill miscues in the second set as the Skyhawks committed eight attack errors and managed only eight kills to push the score to 1-1.

Stonehill responded over the next two sets using a 9-2 run in set three and 11 kills from Arvidson and Maxey combined in the fourth set for its seventh-straight victory.

The Skyhawks (8-1, 1-0 NE-10) finish out the week on the road as they travel to Bentley University to take on Molloy at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16 and Queens (N.Y.) at 1 p.m. and Georgian Court at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 in the Bentley Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Saint Anselm (1-6, 0-1 NE-10) hosts Assumption in a NE-10 match-up beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 15.
