Stonehill Sweeps Merrimack 3-0

Huselton turns in 11 kills, Maxey falls one kill shy of a double-double

EASTON, Mass. (September 6, 2011) –
The Stonehill College women's volleyball team swept Merrimack College, 3-0, by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-19 in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Merkert Gymnasium.

Senior captain Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) tallied a match-high 11 kills (.400) while freshman setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) dished out 26 assists to pace the Skyhawks offense that compiled double-digit kills in each set.

Freshman outside hitter Stephanie Sheehan (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the Warriors with seven kills, eight digs and one block assist.

Ahead 14-10 in the first set, Stonehill went on an 11-3 run highlighted by three kills from Huselton and two service aces to make it 23-14. After back-to-back service errors from both squads freshman Mary Nelson (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) punctuated the first set win with her only service ace of the evening.

After winning the second set 25-21, the Skyhawks staved off a late rally from Merrimack who trailed 21-13 at one point during the third set getting kills from Huselton, Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Texas) and Vivian Fitzgerald (Winfield, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) down the stretch to complete the sweep of the Warriors.

Maxey fell one kill shy of a double-double (nine kills, 12 digs) while defensive specialist Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) turned in a nice match from the back row with 10 digs to go along with three service aces.

Stonehill (3-1, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Friday, September 9 on the road at the West Chester University RAM Fest against Lincoln (Pa.) at 5 p.m. and Chestnut Hill at 7 p.m. Merrimack travels to Southern New Hampshire on Thursday, September 8 for a 5 p.m. start.
