American International Halts Stonehill Streak, 3-1

Skyhawks are dealt first NE-10 loss

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 12, 2010) – The Stonehill College volleyball team fell to a Northeast-10 Conference opponent for the first time all season on Tuesday, in a 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-27, 23-25) defeat at American International College.

Senior Erin Johnson (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) led the Stonehill offense with a .297 hitting percentage and 16 kills, and junior Laura Huselton (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added ten kills and 12 digs, but the Skyhawks were edged out in a close match as three of four sets were decided by the minimum two points.

The Yellow Jackets got double figures in kills and digs from junior Ellisha Terry (Fort Worth, Texas/Everman Joe C. Bean), who finished with 16 kills and 18 digs, and sophomore Darsel Springer (Bonair Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) recorded 13 kills. Freshman Caitlin Connelly (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) posted 32 digs.

Stonehill senior Justine Thompson (Merrimack, N.H./Bishop Guertin) put up another strong defensive performance, collecting 28 digs after setting a season high of 30 last weekend, and freshman Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) added 15 digs alongside nine kills. Senior setter Andrea Wirth (Mesa, Ariz./St. Mary's) finished the night with 35 assists.

Stonehill (8-8, 6-1 NE-10) next visits Pace University on October 15 at 6 p.m. American International (13-8, 5-3 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on October 14 at 7 p.m.
