USTFCCCA Announces 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Regional Award Winners

EASTON, Mass. (March 4, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's cross country's head coach Karen Boen has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, as announce by the organization on Monday.

Boen, who is in her 22nd season in charge of the Skyhawks, has totaled 61 Coach of the Year awards, five of them being women's indoor track and field East Region Coach of the Year. She led the women's team to their sixth-straight NE10 indoor title this past February and 17 All-Conference nods in the two-day meet. The Skyhawks combined for 166 points, while Assumption College wasn't far behind with 120 points taking home second place, and Southern Connecticut totaled 68 points for third place.

With the women's sixth-straight NE10 Indoor Championship under their belt, the Skyhawks have won 11-straight Championships including cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field. Over the past 17 NE10 Championships, Stonehill women have won 16.

During the indoor championship, the women saw two individual event titles including senior Krista Fernandes who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.84-seconds, for her first individual NE10 Championship title. Fernandes, along with senior Jillian Caiazzi and juniors Alyssa Freeman and Anna Lastra, was also part of the 4000-meter distance medley relay team that earned first place on day one of the championship with a time of 12:03.51.

During cross country season, Boen was tabbed USTFCCCA Men's and Women's Cross Country East Region Coach of the Year and NE10 Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. She led the women to their 17th NE10 title and 10th-straight crown this fall, including the program's fourth-straight individual title with Lastra. This was the third time in Conference history that a program saw four-straight individual titles, with Springfield College leading the way with six-straight from 1987-92.

In 2017, Boen saw the fifth year that she tallied both the men's and women's NE10 Coach of the Year Award in cross country, the other years include: 2013, 2012, 2011, and 2004. Boen's success extends beyond the conference level, however, she has also collected East Region Coach of the Year Honors for all six teams. Overall, her resume includes 61 NE10 and East Region Coach of the Year Awards, 36 NE10 Championships, and 18 East Region Championships across the six teams she is in charge of. Boen, who was inducted into the Stonehill Hall of Fame in 2014, has overseen the development of 52 All-Americans and four fellow Hall of Fame inductees.

Stonehill will now send its accepted student-athletes to the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships that will compete from Friday, March 8 to Thursday March 9 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas, hosted by the Pittsburg State University.
