EASTON, Mass. (May 29, 2018) – Stonehill College women's cross country and track & field senior Abby Hersom (Rockland, Maine/Oceanside) and junior Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) have both been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District™ I Women's Cross Country and Track & Field First Team, as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members in Division II from the East Region, today.

Hersom and Fernandes are now added to a list of 14 Skyhawk women's cross country and track & field student-athletes that have made the first team, and 17 total. Trisha Pierson '16 ended her career as a three-time first teamer, while also being named as a CoSIDA Academic All-America second and third team honoree in 2016 and 2015, respectively. The duo were two of six Northeast-10 Conference student-athletes that were named to the District 1 list of 13 honorees. The pair are now eligible for Academic All-America® selection, as voted by members of CoSIDA, to be announced in June.


Hersom earned her first CoSIDA Academic All-District At Large first team honor

Hersom who has earned a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average majoring in heathcare administration at Stonehill, competed in cross country and track & field for all eight semesters as a Skyhawk. The Rockland, Maine native was selected as the 2017 Cross Country NE10 Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner and was named a two-time NE10 Academic All-Conference honoree. At Stonehill, Hersom earned the Healthcare Administration Departmental Award and was a member of Lambda Epsilon Sigma and Upsilon Phi Delta. The senior collected three St. Thomas Aquinas medals throughout her career as she had the highest GPA on her team. She was also earned the 2016 Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award and was named on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll for all eight semesters in her career.

During her career as a cross country student-athlete, Hersom competed in all four NE10 Championships and was named to the NE10 All-Conference second team with her ninth-place finish during her senior season. She also ran in her first-career NCAA Division II East Regional Championship and NCAA Division II Championship this season seeing the program to its 17th-straight ticket to NCAA's. In indoor track & field, Hersom competed in two Conference Championships and all four outdoor track & field Conference Championships, collecting two All-Conference nods, both for the 10000-meter run this past season and last outdoor season.

Fernandes, who has averaged a 3.76 GPA over her three-year career majoring in Psychology at Stonehill. She has been named to the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Director's Honor Roll, while also receiving other honors. The Taunton, Massachusetts native was tabbed on the NE10 Academic All-Conference teams twice and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team once. She also received the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2016.


Fernandes earns her first CoSIDA honor after being part of two DMR teams that competed at NCAA Division II Indoor Championships

Fernandes has competed in six seasons of track & field during her three years wearing the Purple & White as a sprinter and hurdler. She is a six-time member of the USTFCCCA All-East Region team spreading her awards through indoor season running the 400-meter, and 4000-meter distance medley relay and outdoor season competing in the 400-meter hurdles. At this year's indoor NE10 Championship, Fernandes earned three All-Conference honors running in the 400-meter, 4x400-meter, and the 4000-meter distance medley relay. The DMR was tabbed as the champion, while the 4x400 placed second and Fernandes earned third in the 400-meter run.

In her three times running in the indoor New England Championships, Fernandes has won two All-New England honors, both in the 4000-meter distance medley relay. The junior has also assisted the DMR to its fourth- and fifth-straight appearances at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, where the quartet finished 13th and 12th, respectively.

During the outdoor season Fernandes was tabbed on the All-Conference team three times, twice with the 4x400-meter relay team and once in the 400-meter hurdles. She also earned one All-New England honor running with the 4x400-meter relay team in 2016, when the team took home fifth place.

The cross country program won its 16th NE10 title and ninth-straight championship, as the Skyhawks also saw its third-straight individual title. As the runner up at the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship, the Skyhawks punched their 17th-straight NCAA Division II Championship ticket and finished 24th at the Championship. The women then earned their fifth-straight NE10 Indoor Championship in dominating fashion, as they also placed 15th at the end of the two-day New England Championship. The Stonehill College women's track & field team capped off the 2017-18 season with its fourth NE10 Outdoor Championship in program history and followed that up with a ninth-place finish at the New England Championships. The Skyhawk women have now won nine-straight NE10 Championships, including cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field and have combined for 14 of the last 15 championships since 2013.
