Seven Titles Lead Women’s Track & Field to First Place Result at Silfen Invitational

All three relays earned first place


Dexter competed in four events on Saturday, including two individual titles and two titles with the relay teams

NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 14, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's track and field saw seven titles and two school records on the final day at the Silfen Invitational at the David and Lyn Silfen Track & Field, hosted by Connecticut College, taking home first place with 189 points.

The Skyhawks 4x100-meter relay team of Sinead O'Brien (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood), Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers), Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson), and Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/Union 32) finished first in their section and then took home first overall with a time of 48.12, earning 10 points for Stonehill.

The quartet of Fernandes, Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial), Dexter, and Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) earned a first-place result in the 4x400-meter relay, recording a time of 4:01.67, topping the 10 other teams by .12 seconds.

The 4x800-meter relay team, including Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/), Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy), Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), and Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) also took home first place out of nine teams clocking in at 9:17.88, topping the competition by 43 seconds.

After four events from Friday's Heptathlon, Colleen Perry (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) sat third overall with a total of 2,641 points, and she placed third overall with a total of 4,022 points, breaking her own previous school record from last year's outdoor Northeast-10 Conference Championship. Perry placed eighth in the long jump with a mark of 14 feet, 9.25 inches. She then finished sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 96 feet, 1 inch. In the seventh event, Perry finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.86.

With three of the four relay members in the 100-meter dash, Dexter took home her first individual title of the season with a time of 12.27, as Polvere finished in 12.69, good for seventh. O'Brien also competed crossing the finish line with a time of 12.96, finishing just shy of a top-10 mark, earning 11th out of 62 competitors.

On top of her two other titles on the day, Dexter also placed first in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 4 inches.

Polvere also competed in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 26.06, good for the runner-up mark. O'Brien was the next Skyhawk across the finish line with a personal best time of 26.70 out of 80 competitors.

Casey Gannon (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) was the first freshman across the finish line taking home third in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 15.77, while Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) followed in fourth place with a time of 15.82. Sophomore Jenna Raffael (North Reading, Massachusetts/North Reading) also finished in the top-10 with a personal best time of 16.69 earning seventh place.

Raffael also competed in the javelin throwing it a personal best mark of 99 feet, 7 inches finishing 10th out of 32 competitors.

Gannon also competed in the 400-meter hurdles event taking home her first individual title of her career with a personal best time of 1:03.68, while Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) was the runner-up with a time of 1:06.43.

Stonehill's three pole vaulters of Tobin, Colarusso, and Alexandra Sexton (Los Gatos, California/Los Gatos) took home the top three placements, respectively, for the second time in 2018. Tobin reached a mark of 12 feet, 1.5 inches, while Colarusso hit a personal best height of 11 feet, 7.75 inches and Sexton measured a personal best height of 10 feet, 8 inches. Tobin broke her previous school record that hit last weekend at the 53rd Colonial Relays, as Colarusso matched the New England's qualifying standard for the pole vault. 

Sophomore Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) was the only Skyhawk to compete in the triple jump, as she also earned her own individual title with a personal best mark of 35 feet, 7.35 inches out of 30 competitors.

Ward took home the individual title in the high jump with a height of five feet, 4.50 inches, as Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) followed with the same height. Her sister Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro) placed fifth with a mark of five feet, 2.50 inches.

Freshman Fiona Jordan (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) clocked in at a personal best time of 1:00.87 in the 400-meter run placing seventh over 43 competitors. Jordan also ran in the 200-meter sprint, finishing with a personal best time of 26.98 placing 19th.

Sophomore Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) earned fifth place in the discus throw with a toss of 118 feet, 4 inches, while classmate Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) followed in sixth with a mark of 117 feet. Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) also competed in the discus with a distance of 106 feet, 2 inches placing 11th out of 45 competitors.

Litwa also threw the hammer with a toss of 140 feet, 3 inches taking 11th place, while Julianne Holbrook (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) earned 23rd with a mark of 122 feet, 7 inches.

Senior Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narrgansett Regional) finished second out of the field of 53 competitors in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 7 inches, as Lyons took home third with a mark of 40 feet, 4.75 inches. Balzarini also competed with them and placed 10th with a personal best distance of 36 feet, 10.25 inches. Farrell qualified for New England's for her mark in the shot put.

Stonehill will compete at the Holy Cross Multi and Invitational hosted by the College of Holy Cross from Wednesday, April 18-19 and Saturday, April 20 and the Larry Ellis Invitational from Friday, April 20-21 hosted by Princeton University.
