Five New England Qualifiers Lead Women’s Track and Field at URI

Five Skyhawks qualify for New Englands


Fernandes qualified for New England's in the 400-meter run and finished first in the DMR

KINGSTON, R.I. (January 20, 2018) – Stonehill women's track and field saw five Skyhawks qualify for New Englands at the URI Sorlien Invitational on Saturday.

Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy), Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan), Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy), and Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) were added to the list of five other events that have qualified for the New England Championships.

Fernandes clocked in at 59.18 in the 400-meter run, taking fifth place, as Fiona Jordan (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) and Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic) followed in eighth and 10th, respectively. Jordan finished in 1:00.35, as Hurtado clocked in at 1:02.40.

Hannon took third in the 800-meter finals with a time of 2:19.67, as Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) followed with a time of 2:21.24, good for fourth. Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) finished sixth with a time of 2:22.39 and Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) placed eighth with .24 behind Freeman with a time of 2:22.63.

Knox and Lastra took third and fourth in the mile, clocking in at 5:05.37 and 5:06.38, respectively behind two Division I competitors.

Farrell qualified for New England's with her throw of 41 feet, 0.25 inches with the shot put, taking home third, while sophomore Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) followed the senior with a toss of 39 feet, 11.25 inches, good for fourth. Sophomore Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) finished 10th with her mark of 36 feet, 9.5 inches.

The quartet of Lastra, Fernandes, Hannon, and Knox took home the distance medley relay title with a time of 12:20.65.

Sophomore Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) finished ninth out of 24 competitors in the weight throw with a distance of 49 feet, 3.75 inches.


Knox qualified for her second event for New England's in the mile this weekend

Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) and Ashley Colarusso (Tewksbury, Massachusetts/Tewksbury Memorial) tied for fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 11.75 inches.

Courtney Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro), Ashley Daggett (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Attleboro), and Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) fell two inches short of qualifying for New England's' in the high jump, as they reached a mark of 5 feet, 3.25 inches at the invitational, taking home fifth, sixth and seventh. Kathleen Giusti (Merrimac, Massachusetts/Pentucket Regional) followed the trio, finishing eighth with a mark of 5 feet, 1.25 inches.

Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers) competed in two events, including the 200-meter and the 60-meter dash. She finished ninth in the 200-meter sprint with a time of 26.46, as she placed 15th in the 60-meter dash clocking in at 8.15.

Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) was the lone Skyhawk to finish in the top-10 of the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:59.12, good for eighth.

The Skyhawks split next weekend as the team competes at the John Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University, on Friday, January 26 and the Tufts Stampede, hosted by Tufts University, on Saturday, January 27.
