Women’s Track & Field Competes at Holy Cross Invitational

Two freshman lead the pack with first-place finishes

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 22, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team competed at the Holy Cross Invitational, hosted by the College of Holy Cross, on Saturday.

The Skyhawks saw two freshman take home first place, while 11 individuals recorded personal bests.

Freshman Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, New York/Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) took first in the shot put throwing a distance of 12.54m (41 ft, 1.75 inch), as Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) was close behind finishing third with a mark of 11.92m (39ft, 1.25inch).

Lyons' classmate, Jesica Litwa (Seymour, Massachusetts/Seymour) finished third in the discus throw measuring a throw of 37.03m (121ft, 6inch), while Lyons finished sixth with a mark of 35.72m (117ft, 2inch).

Freshman Madison Ward (Holliston, Massachusetts/Holliston) also took first in the high jump with a mark of 1.59m (5ft, 2.50inch).

Sophomore Elizabeth Hannon (Franklin, Massachusetts/Bishop Feehan) and Alyssa Freeman (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica Memorial) took first and second, respectively in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Hannon finished with a time of 11:56.26, while Freeman crossed the line at 12:14.28.

The 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Tulie Finley-Moise (Lexington, Massachusetts/Lexington), Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers), Hannah Ameen (Andover, Massachusetts/Andover) and Olivia Dexter (East Calais, Vermont/Union 32) finished fourth with a time of 49.40.

Freshman Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was the first Skyhawk to cross the finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:46.36, good for fourth in the heat. Senior Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) wasn't far behind with a time of 4:50.15, placing sixth overall and sixth in the heat.

Lastra also clocked in at 2:24.14 in the 800-meter run, good for 11th.

Senior Megan Bobinski (Torrington, Connecticut/Holy Cross) was the only Skyhawk to run the 400-meter dash, clocking in sub-minute, 58.70, good for fourth and a personal best.

In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Krista Fernandes (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) finished fourth with a time of 1:05.66, while freshman Olivia Libby (Dayton, Maine/Thorton Academy) finished ninth with a personal best time of 1:14.59.

Sophomore Taylor Landers (North Andover, Massachusetts/Pingree School) was the only Skyhawk to compete in the 5000-meter run, where she placed fifth with a personal best time of 19:05.97.

Polvere was the first Skyhawk to cross the finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.75.

Other Performances

Freshman Elizabeth Balzarini (Dedham, Massachusetts/Dedham) placed sixth in the shot put with a distance of 10.77m (35ft, 4 inch). Balzarini also finished ninth in the discus with a mark of 33.83m (111ft), while junior Julianne Holbrook (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) measured 29.14m (95ft, 7inch).

Margaret Lepley (Lynn, Massachusetts/Bishop Fenwick) placed seventh in the hammer throw with a 40.87m throw (134ft, 1inch), while Litwa finished 10th and Holbrook 11th.

Jessica Vining (Woburn, Massachusetts/Woburn Memorial) took fifth in the javelin throw finishing with a mark of 33.46m (109ft, 9inch) as Lepley took seventh measuring 31.06m (101ft, 11inch).

In the long jump, Ward place eighth with a distance of 4.88m, while Colleen Perry (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) and Alyssa Vieira (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle and Cassidy) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.

Vieira also took fourth in the triple jump with a personal best mark of 10.24m.

Azariah Boyd (Brockton, Massachusetts/Brockton) took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.62, as Zoe Smith (Rochester, Massachusetts/Old Rochester Regional) finished eighth, clocking in at 16.63. Perry also followed with a time of 16.93, wrapping up the top-10.

In the 100-meter dash, Polvere took the top Skyhawk time finishing eighth with a time of 12.94, and first in the heat, while Finley-Moise finished right behind her in ninth, and second in the heat, with a mark of 12.97. Ameen took 12th with a time of 13.09, while Sinead O'Brien (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) finished 14th with a mark of 13.19.

O'Brien also ran in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 27.11, good for 11th, while Finley-Moise and Ameen followed with 12th- and 13th-place marks, respectively. Finley-Moise finished with a time of 27.15, as Ameen was 11 milliseconds later at 27.36. Perry took 15th in the event with a personal best time of 28.54.

Sophomore Jordan Callahan (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) placed first in her heat, and ninth overall in the 1500-meter run with a personal best time of 4:56.52, while Jillian Caiazzi (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) finished ninth in her heat and 11th overall with a mark of 4:56.81. Danika Wayss (Warwick, Rhode Island/Pilgrim) took 13th crossing the finish with a time of 5:02.93, as Julie Schultz (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) and Kelly Higgins (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Weymouth) weren't far behind placing 16th and 17th, respectively. Schultz clocked in at 5:04.56, while Higgins resulted with a personal best time of 5:04.88.

Anna DeVitto (Pembroke, Massachusetts/Pembroke) and Claire Hurtado (Newington, Connecticut/Northwest Catholic), respectively, placed 15th and 17th in the 800-meter run with times of 2:29.02, personal best, and 2.44.77, respectively.

Stonehill hosts the Skyhawk Invitational in W.B. Mason Stadium on Saturday, April 29 for the team's Purple and White Event and Senior Day. The invitational will begin at 10:30 a.m.
