Lyons Earns NE10 Field Rookie of the Week Honors

Lyons earns her first outdoor weekly honor, third track and field accolade

Northeast 10 Outdoor Track & Field Report: Week 3

EASTON, Mass. (April 4, 2017) – Stonehill College women's track and field freshman Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, N.Y./Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Women's Field Rookie of the Week, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Lyons competed in her first-collegiate outdoor meet on Sunday, April 2 at the Tufts Snowflake Classic, hosted by Tufts University. The freshman finished second out of 39 competitors in the shot put throwing a distance of 12.46m (40 feet, 10.50 inches).

She also competed in the discus, where she placed seventh, earning her second top-10 mark of the season. Lyons hit a mark of 36.11m (118 feet, 5.65 inches).

During the indoor season, Lyons earned NE10 Field Rookie of the Week twice. She threw the shot put 12.31m (40ft, 4.75 inches) for the first accolade finishing third at the Tufts Stampede in January. The freshman also posted the second-best distance among throwers at the URI Coaches Invitational in February, with a mark of 13.20m (43 feet, 3.75 inches), breaking the Stonehill record that was previously set in 2015.

Lyons rounded out the indoor season with a chance to compete in the NE10 Championship, where she placed fourth overall in the shot put. She capped her season with a 6th-place performance at the NEICAAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, throwing a distance of 12.67m (41 feet, 7inch).

The Westerlo, N.Y. native graduated from Bishop Maginn and Berne-Knox Westerlo where she was named MVP for the track team.

Stonehill will travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday, April 8 with a 10:00 a.m. start time, hosted by American International College.
