Lastra, Lyons Named NE10 Rookies of the Week

EASTON, Mass. (February 1, 2017) – Stonehill College women's track and field freshmen Anna Lastra (Bridgton, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and Shayla Lyons (Westerlo, N.Y./Bishop Maginn/Berne-Knox Westerlo) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Track and Field Rookies of the Week, respectively, announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Lastra topped all 1000-meter competitors by finishing first with a time of 3:01.83 at the Tufts Stampede this past weekend. The freshman crossed the finish line four seconds in front of the second-place Tufts University runner.

The distance runner competed in her first 3000-meter run at the URI Sorlein Invitational and earned second place with a time of 10:15.94 to earn her second NE10 Rookie of the Week honor. Her time bypassed both the NE10 and New England qualifications.

Lastra received her first award after opening up her first collegiate indoor track and field meet on Saturday, January 14 at the Beantown Challenge, hosted by Harvard University. The freshman posted a personal best time of 5:10.95 in the mile run finishing eighth in the 20 runner event. The Bridgton, Maine native finished behind seven Division I institutions including UMass Lowell, Harvard, UMass Amherst, Northeastern, and Rutgers. This was also the third best time in the NE10 that weekend. 

The Bridgeton, Maine native graduated from Fryeburg Academy and received the Coaches Award, was named to the All-Northeast team, All-State team, and All-Conference team throughout her four years.

Lyons competed in her third-collegiate meet, where she posted the third-best mark among throwers with a distance of 12.31m (40ft, 4.75inch). The freshman earned her first NE10 honor with this measurement.

The Westerlo, N.Y. native graduated from Bishop Maginn and Berne-Knox Westerlo where she was named MVP for the track team.

The Skyhawks are back in action this weekend when it competes at the URI Coaches' Tribute Meet on Saturday, February 4 with a start time of 11:00 a.m. Stonehill will also be sending a group of four to the Bruce Lehane Scarlett & White Invitational for the Distance Medley Relay on Friday, February 3.
