Skyhawks post five program records, seven All-New England efforts
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (May 9, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team set five more program records today on its way to a ninth-place finish at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium.
In addition to its five program records, Stonehill turned in seven All-New England performances and compiled 42 total points. Southern Connecticut State University won the team title with 72 points, while host MIT finished second (68 points) and the University of New Haven placed third (63 points).
Senior All-American Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) provided the highlight of the day for the Skyhawks with her second-place finish in the 800-meter run in a program record time of 2:06.85, which meets the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and is good enough to rank second on the Division II performance list. Curit collects her second individual All-New England honor of the weekend following her seventh-place finish in the long jump yesterday.
Sophomore Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), the Northeast-10 Conference champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase, posted an All-New England performance in the event today with a program record time of 10:32.99, good for second overall. Borofski, who had already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase earlier this season at the Larry Ellis Invitational, improves her standing from 21st to 13th among the Division II leaders.
Sophomore Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) broke Borofski's one-week old program record in the 1500-meter run, turning in a time of 4:33.21 to finish fifth of 28 entries and collect All-New England accolades. McAdams, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event last weekend, moves up from 47th to 41st on the DII performance list. Classmate Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) also competed in the 1500 and placed 21st with a time of 4:44.22.
Junior All-American Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) set a program record in the 100-meter hurdles for the second consecutive day, posting a time of 14.46 seconds in today's final after clocking in at 14.52 seconds yesterday in the prelims. Esernio earns All-New England honors with her third-place finish.
Sophomore Nicole Borofski broke her own 3000-meter steeplechase record, finishing second in 10:32.99. |
Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay of Curit, classmate Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield), and junior All-Americans Leanne Kent (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) and Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) turned in a program record time of 3:46.42, good for fourth place and All-New England recognition. Their effort ranks 29th in Division II.
Junior Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) registered an All-New England performance in the discus throw, placing fourth of 21 entries with a distance of 135 feet, eight inches.
McAdams, Wilson, senior Erin Rielly (Burlington, Massachusetts/Burlington) and freshman Paige Campbell (Lexington, Massachusetts/Lexington) teamed up to post an All-New England finish in the 4x800-meter relay, as they placed fifth and clocked in at 9:10.68.
Wilson and Rielly also joined Curit in the 800-meter run, finishing 17th and 25th, respectively, with times of 2:15.57 and 2:17.36.
Freshman Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) placed 12th of 23 entries in the shot put with a distance of 39 feet, six inches.
Stronehill's 4x100-meter relay of senior Christina Russo (Winthrop, Massachusetts/Winthrop), sophomore Tulie Finley-Moise (Lexington, Massachusetts/Lexington), and freshmen Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers) and Alison Tobin (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) finished 19th and clocked in at 49.82 seconds.
Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on May 21-23, when its qualified individuals compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.
