Curit Leads Stonehill On Day One Of New England Championships


Senior All-American Maria Curit qualified for tomorrow's 800-meter run final with a program record time of 2:09.91 in the prelims.

Senior sets program record in 800-meter run with time of 2:09.91 to advance to tomorrow's final

BOSTON, Mass. (February 27, 2015) – The Northeast-10 Conference champion Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked second in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Regional Computer Rankings, returned to action this evening with day one of the 2015 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.

Senior All-American Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) turned in one of two impressive performances for Stonehill in the 800-meter run prelims, as she set a program record with a time of 2:09.91, the fastest among 31 entries. Curit, who had already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event, will look to collect her second career New England Indoor Championship in tomorrow's final.  

Classmate Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield) also qualified for the final in the 800-meter run, as she posted the sixth fastest time with a mark of 2:14.22 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Wilson competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships as a junior last season, placing 13th in 2:13.43.  

Junior Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) qualified for tomorrow's final in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.18 seconds in her preliminary heat. Esernio, who posted the 15th fastest time in the event, will be looking for her first career All-New England performance after placing 11th as a sophomore and 27th as a freshman.

Stonehill's 4000-meter distance medley relay team of junior Erin Carberry (Milton, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy), sophomore Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough), and freshmen Julie Schultz (Billerica, Massachusetts/Billerica) and Victoria Sheridan (Great Meadows, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) finished tenth and posted a time of 12:16.75.

Competing at her third career New England Indoor Championships, junior Molly Hellman (Rumson, New Jersey/Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) earned a time of 3:01.18 in the 1000-meter run, but did not qualify for tomorrow's final. Hellman, whose effort was the 14th fastest tonight, finished 27th as a freshman in 2013 before placing 18th as a sophomore last February.

Junior Leanne Kent (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) finished 17th in the 200-meter dash prelims, but did not qualify for tomorrow's final after clocking in at 25.57 seconds.

Junior Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate), who earned All-New England honors last February in the 400-meter dash, placed 22nd in the event tonight with a time of 58.48 seconds, but did not advance to tomorrow's final.  

Senior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle & Cassidy) finished 18th in the 5000-meter run and clocked in at 18:25.41.

Stonehill will be right back in action tomorrow with day two of the New England Championships at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
