Curit Leads Stonehill At URI Sorlien Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. (January 24, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team posted two NCAA qualifying performances, two program records, and six New England qualifying efforts today at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Memorial Invitational at Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island.

Senior All-American Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) provided the highlight of the day for Stonehill with her NCAA Championship automatic qualifying performance in the 800-meter run. Curit set a program record in the event, placing first and clocking in at 2:11.29. Her converted time of 2:09.80 currently ranks first in all of NCAA Division II.  

Curit also qualified for the New England Championships in the long jump, placing second overall and recording a distance of 17 feet, 11.75 inches.

Sophomore Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) turned in the first of two impressive performances by Skyhawks in the 3000-meter run, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a program record mark of 9:58.26. Her adjusted time of 9:53.18 ranks ninth nationally in the event. Borofski finished second, while classmate Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) placed fifth and qualified for the New England Championships, earning a time of 10:15.57.

Junior Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) won the 400-meter dash, registering a time of 58.58 seconds, while freshman Victoria Sheridan (Great Meadows, New Jersey/Pope John XXIII) placed 11th, clocking in at 1:03.50.

Senior Erin Rielly (Burlington, Massachusetts/Burlington) and sophomore Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) both qualified for New Englands in the 1000-meter run, placing eighth and ninth, respectively, with nearly identical times of 3:04.15 and 3:04.23. Junior Molly Hellman (Rumson, New Jersey/Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) followed in tenth place and clocked in at 3:08.18.

Junior Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) turned in a 9.16-second effort in the 60-meter hurdles finals, placing fifth and qualifying for the New England Championships after posting a time of 9.24 seconds in the prelims.

Freshman Emily Knox (Worcester, Massachusetts/Notre Dame Academy) led three Stonehill entries in the 1-mile run with her seventh-place finish in 5:15.70, while senior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle & Cassidy) and freshman Erin Colford (Epping, New Hampshire/St. Thomas Aquinas) placed 14th and 24th, respectively.

Junior Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 6.75 inches, and freshman Gaelin Farrell (Baldwinville, Massachusetts/Narragansett Regional) placed ninth as her toss reached 39 feet, one inch.

Other Stonehill performances:

Esernio and freshman Emily Polvere (Somers, New York/Somers) posted the top two performances among six Stonehill entries in the 200-meter dash, as Polvere placed 12th in 26.46 seconds and Esernio earned a time of 27.09 seconds, good for 17th overall out of 44 participants.

Junior Erin Carberry (Milton, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) placed 11th in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:20.99.

Junior Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, Rhode Island/Coventry) recorded a distance of 32 feet, 6.25 inches in the triple jump, good for sixth overall, and freshman Phoebe Fitzgibbon (Westwood, Massachusetts/Westwood) tied for ninth in the high jump after clearing four feet, 11 inches.

Stonehill will be back in action on Friday, January 30th at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
