Stonehill Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Honors


Senior Chelsea Bishop was one of four Skyhawks to earn USTFCCCA individual All-Academic Awards for both cross country and track & field in 2013-14.

Six Skyhawks collect individual All-Academic awards

EASTON, Mass. (July 28, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team has been recognized as a 2014 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Team, it was announced last week. In addition, six Stonehill student-athletes earned individual All-Academic awards from the USTFCCCA.

In order to qualify for All-Academic Team awards, a squad must post a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or higher. Stonehill, which registered a 3.07 team GPA, was among the 105 women's teams and 50 men's teams in NCAA Division II to earn All-Academic Team status.

Individually, seniors Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield), Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Connecticut/New Fairfield), and Emily Regan (Hanson, Massachusetts/Whitman-Hanson), and juniors Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield) and Emily Anderson (Manchester, Connecticut/Manchester) collected All-Academic Awards from USTFCCCA. To be eligible for this honor, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and have reached a provisional or automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in either indoor or outdoor seasons.

Bishop, who recently graduated with a 3.26 GPA in psychology, earns her second USTFCCCA All-Academic award of the year, after doing so with the cross country team in the fall. Bishop posted a 12th-place finish in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May, clocking in with a school-record time of 35:57.85. The Suffield, Connecticut native also excelled in the 3000-meter steeplechase and the 5000-meter run during the outdoor season, earning USTFCCCA All-East Region honors for her top-5 regional performances.

This past fall, Bishop posted the fifth All-American performance in Stonehill women's cross country history, as she finished 36th overall in 21:47.3 at the NCAA Championships in Spokane, Washington. Bishop, who also served as the women's cross country team's representative on the Stonehill Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), was named to six NE-10 Honor Rolls and five Athletic Director's Honor Rolls during her time at Stonehill.

LaRegina capped off her collegiate career by earning a combined five All-East Region awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons. She was recognized for the 800 and 1500-meter runs in May, after posting top-5 regional performances in the 800, 1-mile run, and the 4000-meter distance medley relay during the winter season. LaRegina also earned a USTFCCCA All-Academic award in the fall with the cross country program, to go with Capital One Academic All-District Honors last month for the second consecutive year.

The New Fairfield, Connecticut native recently graduated with a 3.85 cumulative grade point average and was named to both the NE-10 and Athletic Director's Honor Rolls in each of her eight semesters at Stonehill. LaRegina is a five-time NE-10 Academic All-Conference performer, and a two-time Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award winner. The Lambda Epsilon Sigma and Psi Chi National Honor Society member received the St. Thomas Aquinas, Patron Saint of Students, Medal for having the highest cumulative GPA on the women's track & field team in 2013 and the women's cross country team in 2014.

Regan also earns her second USTFCCCA All-Academic award of the year, as she was one of four Skyhawks to be honored with both the cross country and track & field programs in 2013-14. The interdisciplinary studies major, who recently graduated with a 3.30 GPA, collected a pair of All-East Region award for her efforts in the 5000-meter run during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Regan also excelled with the cross country team, posting three top-10 finishes last fall, including a fifth-place effort at the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Championships followed by a sixth-place finish at the East Region Championships. Over her four years at Stonehill, Regan was named to seven NE-10 Honor Rolls and four Athletic Director's Honor Rolls.

Curit adds a USTFCCCA All-Academic award to an already successful junior season in which she posted the first All-America effort for the Stonehill women's track & field program since 2006. The junior turned in a seventh-place effort in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:10.75 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May. Curit, who has earned a 3.29 GPA as an interdisciplinary studies major, paced Stonehill with three USTFCCCA All-East Region awards during both the indoor and outdoor season, giving her 11 such honors in her career. Curit has been named to the NE-10 Honor Roll in all six of her semesters at Stonehill, and to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll on four occasions.


Junior Maria Curit became Stonehill's first All-American for women's track & field since 2006, as she placed seventh in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in May.

Like Bishop, Regan, and LaRegina, Anderson earns her second USTFCCCA All-Academic Award of the year after being recognized with the cross country program in the fall. The junior, who has posted a 3.62 cumulative GPA as an education major, also earned Capital One Academic All-District honors last month and posted an All-East Region performance during both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons.

Anderson picked up her second career All-Region honor as part of Stonehill's distance medley relay during the indoor season, before being recognized for a third time for her efforts in the 1500-meter run during the outdoor season. The Manchester, Connecticut native has been named to six NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Rolls and five Athletic Director's Honor Rolls in her career, and she was the recipient of a DII ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2012-13.

Rounding out Stonehill's USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees is Wilson, who has earned a 3.51 GPA as a mathematics major. The junior posted All-East Region performances in both the 800 and 1500-meter runs during the outdoor season, while also earning All-Region honors from the USTFCCCA for the 800 during the indoor season. Wilson, who owns the Stonehill indoor record in the 800 with a 2:12.23 mark, competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the event and registered a 13th-place effort in March. Wilson has been named to the NE-10 Honor Roll all six semesters and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll on five occasions, in addition to earning a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award as a sophomore in 2012-13.

Stonehill completed a rare sweep of the NE-10 women's cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field Championships during the 2013-14 academic year. The Skyhawks captured their fifth consecutive cross country title in October, before claiming the first indoor and outdoor track & field titles in program history in February and May, respectively.
