Curit automatically qualifies for NCAA Championships in 800-meter run with second-place finish in 2:08.72
WESTFIELD, Mass. (May 10, 2014) – Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run to highlight Stonehill's performance on the final day of the 2014 New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Westfield State University at Alumni Field.
Curit earned All-New England honors in the 800 with her second place finish in a program record time of 2:08.72. Curit's effort, which meets the automatic qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships in two weekends, currently ranks as the seventh-fastest nationally. Classmate Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield) also collected All-New England accolades in the 800 with her sixth-place finish in 2:12.89.
Senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Connecticut/New Fairfield), who won the 1500-meter run at last weekend's Northeast-10 Championship, posted an All-New England performance today after placing fifth in the same event in a program record time of 4:34.38. LaRegina's effort was also good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships, and it currently ranks as the 30th-fastest time nationally. Juniors Emily Anderson (Manchester, Connecticut/Manchester) and Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle Cassidy) also competed, placing 16th and 17th, respectively. Anderson finished in 4:43.53, while Venturo earned a time of 4:45.57.

Stonehill finished 11th among a field of 39 teams with 27 total points. The University of Rhode Island won the event with 77 points, followed by Southern Connecticut State University (76), the University of Massachusetts (61.5), and Boston College (57).
Freshman Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), who earned All-NE-10 honors with her second place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the NE-10 Championship, turned in a 15th place effort today with a time of 11:16.18.
Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) placed seventh in the discus throw with a toss of 129 feet, four inches to earn All-New England honors.

Stonehill registered its final two All-New England performances with the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. The 4x800 relay of LaRegina, Anderson, junior Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle Cassidy) and freshman Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield) finished eighth in 9:24.21. Buonfiglio led off with a mark of 2:20, followed by Anderson (2:22.4), Venturo (2:25), and LaRegina (2:16.4).
The 4x400-meter relay of Curit, as well as sophomores Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate), Leanne Kent (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) and Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) also turned in an eighth place effort, finishing with a time of 3:53.36. Gray completed the opening leg in 57.7 seconds, followed by Kent (59.1), Esernio (60) and Curit (56.5).
Stonehill, ranked first in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, will be off next week before returning to action on May 22nd-24th at the 2014 NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.
