Stonehill Claims First NE-10 Outdoor Track & Field Title

11 program records fall over two days at W.B. Mason Stadium

EASTON, Mass. (May 3, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked first in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, broke 11 program records en route to claiming its first Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship this weekend at W.B. Mason Stadium.

Stonehill, which led the field of ten teams after Friday's events with 89 points, finished in first today with a total of 197 points. Southern Connecticut State University placed second with 148 points, followed by the University of New Haven (132 points), American International College (100), and Merrimack (77) to round out the top five.

Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), who set a school record in yesterday's 200-meter dash prelims with a time of 25.56 seconds, eclipsed that mark in today's final, as she placed fifth after crossing the finish line in 25.45 ticks. Curit's second record-breaking performance of the day came in the 400-meter dash, as she beat her own mark with a time of 55.72 seconds to place third and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) also competed in the 400, and finished two spots behind Curit in fifth with a time of 56.85 seconds.


Junior Sarah Wilson won the 800-meter final with the 19th-fastest time in the country to date and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships later this month.

Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield) collected All-Conference honors with her first-place finish in a program record time of 2:11.75 in the 800-meter run. Wilson's time meets the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships, and she is currently ranked 19th nationally in the event. Senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Connecticut/New Fairfield) also earned All-Conference accolades for placing second in the 800 with a time of 2:15.75, while junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Connecticut/Manchester) finished fourth in 2:18.37.

Freshman Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), who was named the NE-10 women's track Rookie of the Week on Tuesday and entered today's action seeded second in the 3000-meter steeplechase, turned in an All-Conference effort with her second-place finish in 11:27.85.

Senior Emily Regan (Hanson, Massachusetts/Whitman-Hanson) earned All-Conference honors after finishing second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:43.51, good for eight points towards Stonehill's score.

Sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville), who set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles prelims yesterday, placed third in today's final with a time of 14.73 seconds.

Stonehill's 4x100-meter relay team of Gray, Esernio, sophomore Leanne Kent (North Andover, Massachusetts/Central Catholic) and senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Massachusetts/Framingham) placed fourth in 48.18 seconds, while the 4x400-meter relay of Gray, Kent, Wilson, and Curit finished third in 3:49.24. Both marks set new school records.

Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) took the top spot in the discus throw with a toss of 130 feet, three inches to earn All-Conference accolades for the first time in her outdoor career. Pierson also placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 37 feet, four inches, while freshman Nicole Gilcoine (Rockland, Massachusetts/Rockland) finished fifth with a throw of 38 feet, 2.25 inches.

Senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Massachusetts/Haverhill) finished sixth in the heptathlon with 3869 points after holding the same position at the conclusion of Friday's events. Her best result today came in the long jump, where she placed first with a leap of 17 feet, two inches. Comei also competed in the triple jump, turning in a seventh-place effort with a mark of 36 feet, 0.25 inches.

Senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) and sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter hurdles. Polakowski turned in a time of 1:05.98, while Carberry finished in 1:06.03.

For the first time in school history, Stonehill has swept the Northeast-10 Championship for cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track & field in a single academic year. The Skyhawks will be right back in action next weekend at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held from May 8th-10th at Alumni Field on the campus of Westfield State University in Westfield, Massachusetts.
