Skyhawks looking to collect second NE-10 Track & Field Championship in four months
EASTON, Massachusetts (May 1, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team will attempt to capture the first Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship in program history this Friday and Saturday at W.B. Mason Stadium.
Stonehill, ranked first in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, has been picked to finish first in the pre-championship coaches' poll conducted by the NE-10's ten head coaches. Stonehill received 79 total votes, including seven first place votes, while Southern Connecticut State University checked in second with 73 votes. The University of New Haven (67 votes) was picked third, followed by Merrimack College (54), and American International College (50) to round out the top five.
Stonehill will be hosting the NE-10 Championships for the second time in five years, after hosting in 2010. Admission for this weekend's event is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and children and $1 for students of participating Northeast-10 Conference institutions with valid ID on Friday. Saturday's admission is $7 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and children and $1 for students of competing NE-10 institutions with valid ID. Two day adult passes will also be available on Friday for $10.
The Skyhawks feature three student-athletes that have provisionally qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be hosted by Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, from May 22nd-24th.
Senior captain Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield) will look to replicate her first-place finish in the 10,000-meter run from last season's NE-10 Outdoor Championship, as she is seeded first in the event with her provisional qualifying time of 36:39.29 set at the 2014 Colonial Relays.
Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Connecticut/Suffield), who won the Indoor NE-10 Championship in the 800-meter run in late February and went on to compete in the NCAA Championships, is seeded first in Saturday's 800 with her provisional qualifying time of 2:12.23. Wilson will be joined by eight other Skyhawks, including junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Connecticut/Manchester), who is seeded fourth with a time of 2:16.41, and senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Connecticut/New Fairfield), who is seeded fifth with a time of 2:16.42.
Stonehill will also be well represented in the 1500-meter run, as seven Skyhawks are set to compete, including the top-two seeded individuals. LaRegina is favored to win the event with her 4:34.52 seed time, while Anderson is seeded second with her time of 4:37.46. Both marks were set at the Minuteman Invitational on April 12th. Other Stonehill entries include junior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Massachusetts/Coyle Cassidy), who is seeded fourth with a time of 4:42.30, and freshmen Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) and Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Massachusetts/Lynnfield), who are seeded fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Maria Curit is seeded third in the 400-meter dash, fifth in the 200-meter dash, and second in the long jump for this weekend's NE-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. |
Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) is seeded fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.11 seconds, and sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, Rhode Island/Toll Gate) is seeded tenth with a time of 25.75 seconds. Curit and Gray will also be competing in the 400-meter dash, where they are seeded third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 55.35 seconds and 56.12 seconds. Curit won the 400 as a freshman at the 2012 NE-10 Outdoor Championship, before turning in a third-place effort last year.
Curit is also expected to compete in the long jump, where she is seeded second with a mark of 18 feet, five inches, set at last week's Skyhawk Invitational. Curit collected All-Conference honors after placing second in the long jump in 2012, before finishing fifth last season.
Senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex) will be favored to win the 400-meter hurdles with her seed time of 1:05.31, set at the Colonial Relays. Sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) is seeded sixth in the same event with a time of 1:06.63.
Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, New Jersey/Hanover Park) is seeded first in the discus throw with a mark of 131 feet, 11 inches, and she is also seeded third in the shot put with a mark of 37 feet, six inches. Competing at her first NE-10 Outdoor Championship last season, Pierson just missed earning All-Conference honors, as she posted a third-place effort in the discus.
Senior Emily Regan (Hanson, Massachusetts/Whitman-Hanson) is seeded third in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:36.76, while freshman Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Massachusetts/Marlborough) is seeded sixth with a time of 18:13.60. Regan will look to earn All-Conference accolades for the second year in a row, as she placed second in the 10,000-meter run at the 2013 NE-10 Outdoor Championship.
Freshman Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North), who was recently named the NE-10 Rookie of the Week for women's track, is seeded second in Saturday's 3000-meter steeplechase with her time of 11:33.87 set at the Holy Cross Invitational.

Stonehill's 4x800-meter relay is favored to win with its program record seed time of 9:04.39, set at the Colonial Relays by LaRegina, Anderson, Wilson, and Curit. Stonehill will also enter a 4x400-meter relay team, which is seeded third with a seed time of 3:51.48, and a 4x100-meter relay team, which is seeded fourth with a time of 48.45 seconds.
Sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, New York/Ward Melville) is seeded sixth in the 100-meter hurdles prelims with her program record time of 14.74 seconds, which was set at the Holy Cross Invitational.
Sophomore Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Massachusetts/Chicopee) and freshman Maggie Lepley (Lynn, Massachusetts/Bishop Fenwick) are seeded third and fourth, respectively, in the hammer throw. Tenczar has a seed mark of 123 feet, 11 inches, while Lepley checks in with a mark of 120 feet, 11 inches. Tenczar is also seeded fourth in the javelin throw with a mark of 118 feet, nine inches, while Lepley is seeded sixth with a mark of 112 feet, ten inches. Tenczar will be looking to improve upon her 7th-place finish in the javelin at the 2013 NE-10 Outdoor Championship.
Senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Massachusetts/Haverhill) is seeded seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 2.25 inches, while sophomore Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, Rhode Island/Coventry) is seeded 12th with a mark of 34 feet, 4.25 inches. Comei will also be competing in the heptathlon.
Senior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, New York/Goshen) is seeded fifth in the pole vault with a mark of nine feet, eight inches, set at the Minuteman Invitational.
Senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Massachusetts/Framingham) is seeded tenth in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 12.67 seconds, while Kent is seeded 12th with a mark of 12.74 seconds.
Stonehill, which earned its first NE-10 women's Track & Field Championship in February, will return to action following this weekend's NE-10 Championship at the New England Championships, hosted by Westfield State University at Alumni Field in Westfield, Massachusetts on May 8th-10th.
