Stonehill Places Third At Holy Cross Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 19, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked first in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, returned to action today with a third-place finish at the Holy Cross Invitational, hosted by the College of the Holy Cross at Hart Track.

Senior Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) won the 3000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 11:14.74, which meets the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships next month and currently ranks as the 33rd-fastest time nationally. Freshman Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) finished fourth in 11:33.87.

Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) turned in a trio of top-3 performances, highlighted by her third-place effort in the 100-meter dash in a program record time of 12.40 seconds. Curit also placed third in the 200-meter dash in 26.21 seconds, and second in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, seven inches.

Sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) won the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line in 57.28 seconds, while classmate Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) placed sixth in 1:00.31.

Sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) set a new program mark in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.74 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 14.91 seconds, which was set by Katie Bernazzani in 2012.

Stonehill's third program record of the day came in the 4x100-meter relay, which placed second in 48.45 seconds. Stonehill's other relay that competed, the 4x400-meter, finished third with a time of 4:00.12.

Stonehill placed third out of the five teams that competed at today's meet with 124 points. Holy Cross finished first with 280.5 points, followed by UMass Amherst (182.5), Stonehill (124), the University of Maine (85) and Bryant University (42).

Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) led a list of nine Stonehill entries in the 800-meter run, as she placed fifth in 2:16.43. Senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) finished right behind Wilson, in sixth place with a time of 2:16.55, while junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) placed tenth in 2:19.08.

Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) won the discus throw with a toss of 131 feet, 11 inches, and she also finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, six inches.


Junior Maria Curit posted a trio of top-three finishes today, including a program record mark of 12.40 seconds in the 100-meter dash, good for third place.

Freshman Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) placed sixth in the 1500-meter run in 4:47.38, while senior Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished eighth in 4:50.53.

Other Stonehill highlights include: 

Freshman Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) placed fifth in the high jump after clearing four feet, 10.25 inches.

Senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 1.75 inches, while sophomore Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) finished sixth with a mark of 34 feet, 4.25 inches.

Freshman Maggie Lepley (Lynn, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and sophomore Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) place eighth and ninth in the hammer throw, respectively, with distances of 120 feet, 11 inches, and 115 feet, five inches.

Sophomore Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) led a list of four Skyhawks in the javelin throw with a distance of 109 feet, two inches, good for fourth place.

Sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.33, while junior Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) finished tenth in 1:11.79.

Stonehill will be back in action on Friday, April 25th, when it hosts the annual Skyhawk Invitational at W.B. Mason Stadium. Stonehill is also the host of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
