Wilson provisionally qualifies for NCAA's in 800-meter run after placing second in 2:13.95
AMHERST, Mass. (April 12, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked second in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, turned in a seventh-place finish today at the Minuteman Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts at the UMass Track & Athletic Complex.
Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished second out of 48 participants in the 800-meter run, recording a time of 2:13.95. Wilson's effort, which was good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships next month, also earned eight points towards Stonehill's team score.
Senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) led a list of eight Skyhawks in the 1500-meter run, as she crossed the finish line fourth in a program record time of 4:36.05. Junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) placed sixth in 4:37.46, and classmate Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) finished four spots behind her in 10th with a time of 4:42.30.
Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay posted the team's lone event win of the day, as the quartet of sophomores Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) and Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic), as well as Wilson and classmate Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) finished first in 3:54.60, earning the Skyhawks ten points in the process. Gray ran the opening leg in 56.9 seconds, followed by Wilson in 60.4 seconds, Kent in a matching 60.4 mark, and finally Curit completed the anchor leg in 56.4 seconds.
Curit also placed fourth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.45 seconds, adding five points to Stonehill's score, and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 8.2 inches, good for five more points.
Stonehill placed seventh overall as a team, with 52.33 points, which was ahead of the other non-Division I programs competing, Amherst College and American International College. Boston College finished first with 157 points, while host UMass took second with 151.66 points.
Sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.06 seconds, while junior Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) placed 19th in 17.28 seconds. Hanlon also competed in the 400-meter hurdles and finished 14th in 1:11.81.
Senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 5.6 inches, and sophomore Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) finished eighth with a mark of 32 feet, 11.3 inches.
Gray placed ninth overall in the 200-meter dash after clocking in at 25.75 seconds, and Kent finished 13th in 26.14 seconds. Gray and Kent were also Stonehill's top two finishers in the 100-meter dash, as Gray placed 11th in 12.71 seconds and Kent finished 14th in 12.84 seconds.
Freshman Nicole Gilcoine (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) and sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) finished back-to-back in the shot put with throws of 36 feet, 6.2 inches and 36 feet, 5.8 inches, respectively, good for seventh and eighth place. Pierson also placed eighth in the discus throw with a toss of 121 feet, 6.7 inches, while classmate Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) earned 10th place and Gilcoine finished 11th.

Other Stonehill highlights include:
Sophomore Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) earned a mark of 116 feet, 8.4 inches in the hammer throw, good for 11th place, and freshman Maggie Lepley (Lynn, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) finished right behind her in 12th with a throw of 112 feet, 11.5 inches. Lepley also led a list of four Skyhawks in the javelin throw, as she placed 10th with a distance of 112 feet, 10 inches.
Four Stonehill freshmen finished within six spots of each other in the 1500-meter run. Aisha McAdams (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) and Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, with times of 4:49.05 and 4:49.24, while Nicole Borofski (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) finished 26th and 27th in 4:53.72 and 4:54.35.
Freshman Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) finished 11th in high jump after clearing four feet, 9.5 inches, and senior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) tied for eighth in pole vault with a height of nine feet, 8.1 inches.
Sophomore Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) and senior Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) placed 19th and 20th in the 800-meter run, respectively, with times of 2:22.69 and 2:22.71, while senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and junior Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) finished 24th and 27th, respectively, in the 200-meter dash.
Stonehill will be back in action next weekend at the Holy Cross Crusades, hosted by the College of the Holy Cross at Hart Track in Worcester, Mass. Stonehill, which will host its annual home Skyhawk Invitational on Friday, April 25, is also the host of the 2014 Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium on Friday and Saturday, May 2-3.
