Skyhawks post three program records, place 24th at Colonial Relays
EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team has received a pair of weekly honors from the Northeast-10 Conference, it was announced yesterday by the league office.
Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) has been named the NE-10 Women's Track Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career following her three school record performances at the 49th Annual Colonial Relays last weekend. Curit placed ninth overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.92, which was good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships next month and currently ranks as the 11th fastest time nationally. She also finished 22nd out of 89 entries in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 25.56 seconds. This effort met the automatic qualifying standard for the New England Championships, which will be held May 8-10 at Westfield State University.
Curit's third program record performance last weekend came as part of Stonehill's 4x800 meter relay, which placed fifth overall out of 24 teams at the Colonial Relays in 9:04.39. Curit ran the opening leg in 2:14.8, followed by senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) in 2:16.9, junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) in 2:19.3, and classmate Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) completed the anchor leg in 2:13.3.
Curit collects her first NE-10 weekly award of the outdoor season after doing so four times during the indoor season for her efforts with Stonehill's 4x400 and 4000-meter distance medley relay teams. Overall, she has been recognized by the conference seven times in her career, and she currently owns at least a share of 12 Stonehill indoor and outdoor track & field records. LaRegina earns her fourth career NE-10 Relay of the Week award, while Anderson collects her third and Wilson her second.
All four of Stonehill's student-athletes that were honored this week competed at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships last month in Winston-Salem, N.C. Anderson, Curit, and LaRegina were a part of Stonehill's distance medley relay, along with sophomore Jordan Gray, that placed ninth in 11:54.08. Curit also finished 14th in the 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 56.99 seconds, while Wilson placed 13th in the 800-meter run in 2:13.43.
Stonehill, ranked second in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Computer Rankings, will be back in action this weekend at the Minuteman Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts at the UMass Track & Athletic Complex in Amherst, Mass.
