Buonfiglio Named NE-10 Track Rookie Of The Week

Lynnfield, Mass. native places sixth in 1500-meter run at BSU Bears Invitational

EASTON, Mass. (March 25, 2014) – Stonehill College freshman Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week for women's outdoor track & field, it was announced today by the league office.

Stonehill opened its outdoor season on Saturday at the BSU Bears Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University at the Swenson Athletic Field Complex, just a week after competing at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. Buonfiglio was one of seven Skyhawks to compete in the 1500-meter run on Saturday, as she placed sixth out of 31 participants with a time of 5:04.40. Juniors Brianna Venturo and Brittany Venturo placed second and fourth, respectively, while Skyhawks also occupied spots seven through ten.

Buonfiglio was also a part of Stonehill's 2013 Northeast-10 and East Region Champion cross country team. In her first collegiate race, she placed sixth out of 113 participants at the Shacklette Invitational on September 7th, clocking in at 19:26.4. She followed that up by finishing 20th in 23:28.2 at the DII Challenge the next weekend, and wrapped up her season by helping Stonehill claim its fifth consecutive NE-10 title on October 27th with a 24th-place finish in 19:18.

Buonfiglio is a 2013 graduate of Lynnfield High School, where she competed in both track & field and cross country. During her junior year at Lynnfield, she set school records in the 1000-meter run (2:57) and 1-mile run (5:11). Buonfiglio also placed 14th at the Massachusetts All-State Cross Country Meet held at Franklin Park with a time of 19:23.

Stonehill is off this weekend, but will return to action on April 4th and 5th at the 49th Annual Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary University at Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va. Stonehill is set to host both its annual Skyhawk Invitational at W.B. Mason Stadium on April 25th, and the Northeast-10 Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships the following weekend, on May 2nd and 3rd.
