Stonehill Opens Outdoor Season At BSU Bears Invitational

Comei, Pierson post event wins for Skyhawks

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (March 22, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team opened its 2014 outdoor season today at the BSU Bears Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University at the Edward C. Swenson Athletic Field Complex.

Senior captain Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) led a list of three event winners for Stonehill with her first-place finish in the high jump, after clearing five feet, one inch. Freshman Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) placed third in the same event with a height of four feet, 11 inches.

Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) won the discus throw with a toss of 126 feet, while classmate Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) finished seventh with a distance of 108 feet, nine inches. Pierson also placed 5th in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 0.25 inches.

Stonehill's 4x100 meter relay team posted the third event win of the day for the Skyhawks after recording a time of 50.41 seconds. Wheaton College placed second in 51.72 seconds, and Assumption College finished third in 51.93 seconds.


Sophomore Trisha Pierson won the discus throw with a toss of 126 feet, while also placing fifth in the shot put.

Sophomore Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) finished second out of 47 participants in the 100-meter dash after clocking in at 13.66 seconds. Senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) placed 11th in 14.05 seconds, while junior Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and sophomore Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

Junior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) led seven Skyhawks in the 1500-meter run, as she placed second in 4:51.06. Classmate Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) finished fourth in 4:59.71, and Stonehill also claimed spots six through ten, as well. Freshman Alexandra Buonfiglio (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) placed sixth, followed by seniors Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland), and Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman Hanson), and sophomore Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven Regional).

Sophomore Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) placed fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 118 feet, nine inches. Freshman Maggie Lepley (Lynn, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) and Booth-Howe finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while Stevens placed 12th.

Sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) placed fifth out of 27 participants in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.08, while junior Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) and sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdles.

Stonehill will be off next weekend before returning to action on April 4th-5th at the 49th Annual Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary University in Williamsburg, Va.
