Skyhawk DMR places ninth at NCAA Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C.
EASTON, Mass. (March 17, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's 4000-meter distance medley relay team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Relay of the Week for women's track and field for the third time this season, the league office announced today.
Stonehill's distance medley relay team narrowly missed earning All-America honors at the NCAA Championships this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., with its ninth-place finish in 11:54.08. Junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) led off the relay with a 3:45.31 split in the opening 1200-meter leg, sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) followed with a 56.67 mark in the 400-meter portion, junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) posted a 2:13.39 time in the 800-meter leg, and senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) closed it out with a 4:58.73 split in the 1-mile anchor leg. Stonehill finished just 1.03 seconds after eighth-place Grand Valley State University for the final All-America spot.
This marks the third time this season that Stonehill's DMR has been named the NE-10's Relay of the Week, and the fourth time overall that a Stonehill relay has been honored by the conference this season. The DMR was last recognized on March 3rd for its first-place finish in a school record time of 11:41.79 at the New England Championships.
The DMR team of LaRegina, Curit, Gray, and junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was also named Relay of the Week on February 3rd after placing first in 11:52.27 at the URI Coaches Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. The following week, Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay of Curit, Gray, senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and sophomore Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) earned the conference's weekly relay award for their seventh-place effort in 3:51.48 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.
Curit and Gray have now been honored four times each this season for their efforts with Stonehill's 4x400 and distance medley relays. Gray was also recognized three times last season for the 4x400 relay, while Curit was honored twice last year for the same event. LaRegina earns her third career NE-10 Relay of the Week award, and Anderson collects her second.
Stonehill will open its 2014 outdoor season this weekend at the BSU Bears Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University at the Swenson Athletic Field Complex.
