DMR Win Highlights Day One Of New England Championships For Stonehill


Junior Maria Curit ran the 800-meter leg in Stonehill's distance medley relay victory, and she also qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.25 seconds.

DMR captures first New England Championship with school-record time of 11:41.79

BOSTON, Mass. (February 28, 2014) – The Northeast-10 Champion Stonehill College women's track & field team, ranked second in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Regional Computer Rankings, is in third place with 17 total points after day one of the 2014 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.

Stonehill's performance today was highlighted by the 4000-meter distance medley relay team, which won its first New England Championship in the event with a school-record time of 11:41.79. Junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) led off the opening 1200-meter leg with a 3:36.4 split, followed by sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), who ran the 400-meter portion in 56.4 seconds, before junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) completed the 800-meter leg in 2:12.6, and senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) closed it out with a 4:56.8 split in the 1-mile anchor leg. Stonehill's only event win of the day captured ten points for the Skyhawks.

Curit and Gray also both qualified for tomorrow's final in the 400-meter dash with the fifth and sixth-fastest qualifying times in today's preliminary heats, respectively. Curit won the fourth heat in 56.25 seconds, while Gray took the second heat in 56.66 seconds.

Stonehill placed three in the top-12 of the 5000-meter run, led by senior Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield). Bishop finished fourth overall in 17:18.70, earning five points for Stonehill's team score. Classmate Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) came in three spots behind her, in seventh place with a time of 17:36.76, while junior Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) placed 12th in 17:54.78.

Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) won her preliminary heat in the 800-meter run, qualifying for the final tomorrow with a time of 2:15.31. Wilson's effort was the fourth-fastest qualifying effort today.

Senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) both qualified for tomorrow's semifinal in the 60-meter hurdles, with the 13th and 16th-fastest times, respectively. Polakowski clocked in at 9.19 seconds, while Esernio posted a time of 9.24 seconds.

Senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) was the 16th and final competitor to qualify for the semifinal tomorrow in the 60-meter dash, as she registered a time of 7.95 seconds in her preliminary heat.

Sophomore Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) missed out on qualifying for tomorrow's 1000-meter run final, as she turned in a time of 3:03.87, good for 18th overall.

Stonehill will be right back in action tomorrow with day two of the New England Championships at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center, beginning with LaRegina and Venturo in the 1-mile run semifinal at 11:15 a.m.
