Stonehill Strong At Tufts Cupid Challenge

Wilson improves on provisional qualifying time in 800-meter run

MEDFORD, Mass. (February 15, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked 25th in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Computer Rankings, and ranked third in the East Regional rankings, returned to action today at the Tufts Cupid Challenge, hosted by Tufts University at the Gantcher Athletic Center in Medford, Mass.

Stonehill excelled in the 800-meter run, as junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) improved on her provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships by placing first overall in 2:14.58, while senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn.New Fairfield) finished right behind her, in second place with a time of 2:16.42. Junior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) and sophomore Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) also competed in the race, placing fifth and ninth, respectively.

Junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) claimed the top spot in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:36.09, while sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) placed ninth overall in 1:43.88. Curit also finished first in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.75 inches, while sophomore Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) finished 11th with a jump of 15 feet, 8.25 inches.


Junior Maria Curit won the 600-meter run with a time of 1:36.09.

Sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.21 seconds. Classmate Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) finished in sixth with a time of 26.74 seconds, while senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) placed 11th in 27.28 seconds.

Senior captain Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished third overall in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:09.64, while classmate Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) placed 13th in 5:28.51.

Stonehill placed two in the top six of the 60-meter hurdles, as sophomore Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Polakowski placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Esernio earned a time of 9.20 seconds, while Polakowski was right behind her in 9.29 seconds.

Junior Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) was Stonehill's top finisher in the 1000-meter run, as she placed fourth overall in 3:05.12.

Senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) placed seventh in the 60-meter dash after earning a time of 8.03 seconds.

Senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) finished sixth in the high jump after clearing four feet, 11.75 inches, while freshman Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) placed 15th after clearing four feet, 9.75 inches.

Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 0.25 inches, while classmate Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) was Stonehill's top finisher in the weight throw with a distance of 40 feet, 1.25 inches, good for 25th place overall.

Stonehill will be back in action next weekend at the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston, Mass.
