Skyhawks relay set school record at URI Coaches Tribute Meet on Saturday

EASTON, Mass. (February 3, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's 4000-meter distance medley relay team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Relay of the Week for women's track and field, the league office announced today.

Stonehill's distance medley relay team won the event on Saturday at the URI Coaches Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, with a time of 11:52.27. The time not only set a school record, but was also good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C. in March. Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) ran the opening 1200-meter leg in 3:37.5, before giving way to sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), who completed the 400-meter portion in 57.6 seconds, followed by junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), who finished the 800-meter leg in 2:12.9, and finally senior captain Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ran the 1-mile anchor leg in 5:04.9. Their time beat the provisional qualifying mark of 12:22.84 by more than 30 seconds, and it is the second fastest time in the country to date.

Curit, who set a school record last week in the 400-meter dash, and Wilson, a two-time USTFCCCA All-East Region performer in the distance medley relay, were also a part of Stonehill's last school record performance in the DMR, along with classmates Jill Alves '12, and Maura Ferrarini '12. The foursome set the previous mark with a time of 12:03.47 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on February 11th, 2012.

Gray and Curit have earned a combined five NE-10 Relay of the Week awards in their careers, as Gray was recognized three times for her efforts in the 4x400 meter relay last season, and Curit was honored twice in 2012-13 for the same event. Gray also earned USTFCCCA All-East Region accolades in the 4x400 relay as a freshman. Wilson and LaRegina collect NE-10 Relay of the Week honors for the first time in their careers.

Stonehill, ranked second in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Regional Computer Rankings, will be back in action this Friday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
