Distance medley relay team provisionally qualifies for NCAAs
KINGSTON, R.I. (February 1, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked second in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association East Regional Computer Rankings, set two school records and registered one provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships while competing today at the URI Coaches Tribute Meet, hosted by the University of Rhode Island at Mackal Fieldhouse.
Stonehill's distance medley relay team of junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield), sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and senior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in March with their first-place finish in a school-record time of 11:52.27. Wilson ran the opening 1200-meter leg in 3:37.5, before giving way to Gray, who completed the 400-meter portion in 57.6 seconds, followed by Curit, who finished the 800-meter leg in 2:12.9, and finally LaRegina ran the 1-mile anchor leg in 5:04.9. Their time beat the provisional qualifying mark of 12:22.84 by more than 30 seconds, and it is the second fastest time in the country to date.
Curit, who set a school record last week in the 400-meter dash, and Wilson were also a part of Stonehill's last school record in the distance medley relay, along with classmates Jill Alves '12, and Maura Ferrarini '12. The foursome set the previous mark with a time of 12:03.47 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on February 11th, 2012.
Sophomore Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) was the other Skyhawk to set a new school mark today, as her throw of 38 feet, 6.25 inches in the shot put eclipsed her previous record by 6.5 inches. Pierson's effort was good for an eighth-place finish.

Freshman Alexandra Grimaldo (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) placed third in the 3000-meter run after clocking in with a time of 10:44.32, while senior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 0.25 inches.
Junior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was Stonehill's top finisher in the 1000-meter run, placing 7th overall in 3:02.45. Sophomore Molly Hellman (Rumsonm, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven Regional) also competed in the event, finishing 12th in 3:06.20.
Three Skyhawks placed in the 1-mile run, led by junior Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), who finished 16th with a time of 5:21.82. Seniors Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) and Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) finished less than one second apart, in 18th and 19th place, respectively. Biggers clocked in at 5:27.93, while Ulcena earned a 5:28.24 mark.
Senior Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) placed 30th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.75 seconds, and sophomore Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) earned a 12th place result in the 500-meter dash, finishing in 1:23.89.
Stonehill will be back in action next Friday at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
