KINGSTON, R.I. (January 18, 2014) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team returned to action today for the first time in over a month at the University of Rhode Island Sorlien Invitational, held at the school's Mackal Fieldhouse. Stonehill was one of two Division II schools competing in the event, as the field contained primarily Division I programs including host Rhode Island, the University of Massachusetts, Providence College, and Bryant University.

Sophomore Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), who set a school record in the 200-meter dash in Stonehill's first meet of the season, took the top spot in the 500-meter dash today, registering a time of 1:16.29. Her personal best effort was good enough to qualify for the New England Championships in late February. Gray was also part of Stonehill's 4x400 meter relay team that placed second in 4:04.67, along with classmates Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic), and senior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex).

Kent was one of three Skyhawks to post second-place finishes in individual events today, as she earned the runner-up spot in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 1:01.87. Polakowski was Stonehill's top finisher in the 200-meter dash, placing fifth in 26.91 seconds.

Senior captain Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) placed third overall in the 1-mile run, clocking in at 5:08.16, while junior Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle and Cassidy) finished fifth with a 5:17.46 mark in the same event.

Junior Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./West Suffield) qualified for the New England Championships by placing second in today's 1000-meter run in 3:02.35, while junior Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) claimed the second spot in the 800-meter run today with a time of 2:20.85. Like Gray and Wilson, senior captain Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was able to qualify for the New England Championships in the 3000-meter run event, as she placed fourth overall with a time of 10:18.12 seconds. Junior Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle and Cassidy), the other Skyhawk to compete in the 3000-meter run, finished two spots behind Bishop, in sixth place with a 10:45.69 mark.

Senior captain Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) narrowly missed her own triple jump school record of 35 feet, 6.75 inches with her 35'6'' effort today, which earned her a sixth-place finish. Comei also competed in the high jump event, registering a fourth-place finish after clearing five feet, one inch.

Stonehill will be back in action next Friday, when the team will be split between Boston University's John Thomas Terrier Invitational and Northeastern University's Joe Donahue Games.
