Stonehill Finishes 21st At New England Championships

4x400 relay highlights the day with a seventh place finish for the Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (May 11, 2013) -  The Stonehill College women's track and field team finished in 21st place after the completion of the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Stonehill College at W.B. Mason in Easton, Mass.

Stonehill earned two points on the final day of the meet to bring its total to 14 points for the three-day competition. The University of Rhode Island took the top spot in the competition after totaling 91.50 points, while UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell scored 80 points apiece to tie for second. The University of New Haven (4th, 60.50) and Northeastern University (5th, 57.50) rounded out the top-five.

Stonehill's 4x400 relay team of Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield), Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), and Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) posted a seventh place finish during day three. The squad timed in at 3:52.66 with Gray running the lead leg in 57.30, Wilson following in at 60.20 in the second leg, Esernio taking the third leg in 58.60, and Curit finishing it off with a time of 56.30 in the anchor leg.

With the seventh spot, the relay team is awarded All-New England status. The honor is Curit's second of the meet after she finished eighth in the long jump event yesterday. Senior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and junior Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) also earned All-New England recognition yesterday after they finished third and fourth respectively in the 10,000-meter race.

Other Notable Finishes:

Wilson placed tenth in the 800-meter race. The sophomore timed in at 2:16.14 in the event.

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) competed in the 1500-meter race. Anderson recorded a time of 4:40.75 to place 19th in the event.

Stonehill's 4x800 relay team of Anderson, Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington), Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), and Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) finished 12th with a time of 9:23.57.

Freshman Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) was the final competitor of the day for Stonehill. Pierson posted a 16th place finish with a throw of 117-06.
