Skyhawks Place Fifth at NE-10 Championships

11 Skyhawks place on day two to lead the team to fifth place

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 4, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team registered fifth place in the Northeast-10 Conference Track and Field Championships Saturday afternoon on the campus of American International College in Springfield, Mass.

The Skyhawks had 11 athletes place in the top-eight on the day and finished the meet with 90 points and a fifth place finish. The University of Massachusetts Lowell took first place with 189 points, followed by New Haven (119), American International (114), and Southern Connecticut State (91).

Senior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) registered a fourth place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase to lead the way for the Skyhawks on day two. Veit timed in at 11:53.49 to earn fourth place and collect five points for the Skyhawks.


Junior Angelina Comei posted an eighth place finish in the triple jump event with a measurement of 34-07.75

Three student-athletes collected top-eight finishes for the Skyhawks in the 5000-meter run. Senior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) led the trio by posting fourth place in a time of 18:27.13. Classmate Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) registered sixth place (18:40.82) and sophomore Brittany Venturro (Taunton, Mass./Coyle and Cassidy) claimed eighth place (18:52.51) to round out the scoring for Stonehill in the event.

Two more student-athlets placed in the 400-meter dash for Stonehill. Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) recorded third place in a school-record time of 56.37 seconds and freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) took eighth place in 58.12 seconds. Curit broke her own school-record time of 56.58 that she recorded at last year's NE-10 Championships.

Freshman Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) scored four more points for Stonehill when she posted a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Esernio finished in 15.15 seconds to place fifth after qualifying in 15.19 seconds on Friday afternoon.

Esernio, Gray, Curit, and Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) also posted a school record in the 4x400 relay event. The group notched a record time of 3:52.65 to claim third place in the event. Wilson opened the race with a 59.9 leg, followed by a 56.3 second leg by Gray, Esernio followed with a 59.7 third leg, and Curit finished with a 55.8 anchor leg. The relay team bested the previous school-record that was posted last April at the Holy Cross Crusade Meet.

Wilson also was one of two Skyhawks to place in the 800-meter race. Wilson timed in at 2:15.10 to earn fifth place, while Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) earned eighth place in 2:16.71. The fifth place and eight place finishes added five more points to Stonehill's total.

The Skyhawks also received eighth place finishes from Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) and Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy). Comei placed in eighth in the triple jump event with a measurement of 34-07.75 for the Skyhawks. Carberry took the eighth spot in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 41:06.81.

The Skyhawks return to competition next weekend for the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet will take place at W.B. Mason Stadium on the campus of Stonehill College.
