Stonehill Places Second at Skyhawk Invitational

17 Different Skyhawks Place as Stonehill takes second place in its home event.

EASTON, Mass. (April 26, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team placed second out of nine teams at the Skyhawk Invitational Friday afternoon at W.B Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass.

Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) placed in three individual events to lead the way for Stonehill. Curit posted second place marks in the long jump and 400-meter dash and earned third place in the 200-meter dash.

Curit opened the meet with a second place finish in the long jump event. The sophomore measured in at a school-record mark of 18-05.00, finishing behind a competitor from American International. Curit's measurement bested her previous school-record of 18-03.25 which she recorded last year at the NE-10 Championships.

Curit also posted a second place finish in the 400-meter dash. Curit timed in at 57.48 seconds, clocking in just 0.20 seconds faster than teammate Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) who claimed third place in 57.68 seconds.

Curit then earned third place in the 200-meter dash. The Biddeford, Maine native registered a 25.96 second time to take third. Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) also participated in the event, with Russo taking 13th (27.21) and Egesi placing 20th (27.54).

Egesi posted a top-eight finish in the 100-meter dash for the Skyhawks. Egesi placed sixth with a time of 13.07 in the event to earn three points for Stonehill. Russo also competed in the event, earning ninth place in a time of 13.34.

Three Skyhawks placed in the 800-meter run, to earn 10 points for the team. Sophomore Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) led the trio when she placed fourth in 2:18.13. Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) followed in sixth and seventh respectively. LaRegina timed in at 2:18.68 and Rielly clocked in at 2:19.74.

Freshman Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) led a group of Skyhawks that placed in the 400-meter hurdles. Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown), and Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) also placed in the event. Carberry took second place (1:06.34), Polakowski claimed third (1:06.51), Hanlon finished in sixth (1:08.94), and Esernio placed seventh (1:10.31) in the race.

Esernio also collected points in the 100-meter hurdles for the Skyhawks. The freshman sprinter took fifth place in the event with a time of 15.05. Also competing in the event were Polakowski and Hanlon who posted 12th and 13th.

Several Skyhawks also placed in throwing events during the meet. Freshman thrower Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) posted a fourth place finish in the discus throw event. The freshman launched a throw of 115-07 to earn five points for Stonehill. Fellow freshmen Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) and Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) placed third and fifth in the javelin throw. Tenczar measured in at 110-07 and Booth-Howe recorded a mark of 106-07.

Junior vaulter Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) registered a school-record mark and placed third in the pole vault. Olin measured in at 10-00.00, breaking her previous school-record of 9-06.25 which she posted last year at the Holy Cross Crusades.

Two other Skyhawks placed in field events during the meet. Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) claimed seventh place in the high jump event when she cleared 4-08.25. Freshman Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) registered the final top-eight finish for Stonehill jumpers and vaulters. The freshman took sixth place in 32-00.75 to earn three team points for the Skyhawks.

Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) rounded out the individual points for the Skyhawks when she placed in the 1500-meter race. Anderson placed sixth in 4:41.37 to earn three points.

Stonehill's three relay teams each placed in the top-five during the meet. The 4x100 relay team consisting of Egesi, Russo, Comei, and Fitzgerald earned fifth place in 51.92 seconds. The 4x400 relay team of Gray, Esernio, Polakowski, and Curit took home first place in a time of 4:00.74. The 4x800 relay team also took home first place. The group of Wilson, Anderson, Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic), and Rielly finished in a facility-record mark of 9:32.10.

The Skyhawks return to action next Friday and Saturday for the Northeast-10 Championships. American International College will host the meet, beginning at 10:30 am.
