Stonehill Takes Fifth at Holy Cross Invitational

Curit places in three events to lead Stonehill to fifth place.

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 20, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team recorded 45 points and captured fifth place at the Holy Cross Invitational at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) recorded top-eight finishes in the 400-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the long jump events to lead the way for Stonehill. Six other Skyhawks placed in the top-eight to earn points for the team.

Curit opened the meet with a seventh place finish in the 200-meter dash event. Curit finished the race in 26.11 seconds to earn two points for the Skyhawks. Freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham), and Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) also competed in the race. Gray finished 11th, Polakowski placed 27th, Egesi earned 31st, and Hanlon came in at 37th.

Following the 200-meter dash, Curit recorded a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Curit finished in 57.75 seconds, just 1.17 seconds off the school-record. Curit led three other Skyhawks who finished in the top-15 in the 400-meter race. Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) placed 11th in 1:01.33, Hanlon followed in 13th with a time of 1:01.88, and Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) earned 14th in 1:02.30.

Curit posted her final top-eight performance in the long jump event, with a school-record tying mark. The sophomore recorded an 18-03.25 jump in the event to take fourth. The jump ties the school-record that she previously set last year at the NE-10 Championships. Curit led two other Stonehill athletes in the event. Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) took 11th (16-04.50) while Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) placed 14th (15-04.00).

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) placed seventh in the 800-meter race to earn two points for the Skyhakws. The sophomore timed in at 2:18.98, leading Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) who placed 19th (2:25.56) and Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) who placed 23rd (2:27.33).

Senior distance runner Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) also notched a top-eight finish for the Skyhawks. McBride placed sixth in the 5000-meter race in a time of 18-04.23 to earn three points for the team.

Freshman Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, Ward Melville) placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Esernio finished in 14.99 seconds, just .09 seconds off the school-record mark. With fifth place, the freshman captured four points for Stonehill.

Following Esernio's performance in the 100-meter hurdles, Comei earned sixth place in the triple jump event. The junior measured in at 33-07.50 to collect three points for the Skyhawks. Fitzgerald also competed in the event, placing 11th with a 32-05.75 jump.

Two Skyhawks recorded top-eight finishes in the discus throw event. Freshmen Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park), Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) finished in fifth and eighth respectively for Stonehill. Pierson launched a throw of 113-10 while Booth-Howe registered a toss of 104-06.

Booth-Howe and Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) also recorded points for Stonehill in the javelin throw event. Booth-Howe earned fifth with a throw of 105-10 and Tenczar took seventh, tossing the javelin 102-06 feet.

Other Notable Finishes:

Junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) placed ninth in the pole vault event, tying a school-record with a 9-06.25 measurement.

Egesi, Polakowski, and Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) competed in the 100-meter dash. Egesi placed 11th (12.89), Polakowski earned 18th (13.12), and Russo finished 25th (13.39).

Three Skyhawks finished in the top-20 in the 1500-meter race. Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) timed in at 4:51.32 to place 11th, Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) registered a 4:53.68 time to take 13th, and Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) recorded a time of 5:02.29 to earn 18th.

Stonehill returns to action next Friday when it hosts the Skyhawk Invitational Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
