Stonehill Takes 17th at UMass Minuteman Invitational


Sophomore Sarah Wilson posted seventh place in the 800-meter race

AMHERST, Mass. (April 13, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team placed 17th at the UMass Minuteman Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Saturday afternoon.

Sophomores Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) and Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and freshmen Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Trisha Pierson (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) all posted top-eight finishes for the Skyhawks. Curit and Pierson placed sixth, while Esernio and Wilson registered seventh place finishes.

Curit opened the meet for Stonehill with a sixth place finish in the long jump event. The sophomore posted a 17-04.25 measurement in the event, just five inches off her school record. Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) also participated in the event, recording an 11th place finish (16-07.00).

Pierson earned the second sixth place finish of the meet for Stonehill. The freshman measured a throw of 126-04 in the discus throw event. Pierson led two other Skyhawks who participated in the event. Freshman Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass./John D. O'Bryant) notched a 21st place finish (93-08) and Haela Booth-Howe (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) placed 23rd (89-02).

Esernio posted two points when she placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles event. The freshman finished the event in 15:06.8 seconds to earn the points for the Skyhawks. Junior Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and sophomore Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) also competed in the event. Polakowski placed 21st (16.41) while Hanlon recorded a 30th place finish (16.98).


Sophomore Maria Curit claimed sixth place in the long jump event

Wilson recorded the final points for Stonehill in the meet, placing seventh in the 800-meter event. The sophomore recorded a time of 2:15.74 to earn two points for the Skyhawks. Curit, Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington), and Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) also ran the event for Stonehill. Curit came in 11th (2:18.09), Rielly earned 16th place (2:20.66), and LaRegina finished 30th (2:22.91).

Other Notable Finishes:

Booth-Howe and freshman Jenn Tenczar (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee) earned 13th (100-01) and 16th (91-06) place respectively.

Polakowski, Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy), and Hanlon recorded top-15 finishes in the 400-meter hurdles. Polakowski finished 10th (1:07.89), Carberry placed 12th (1:09.24), and Hanlon earned 13th (1:09.59).

Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) posted a 15th place finish in the triple jump. Fitzgerald measured in at 32-05.50 feet for the Skyhawks.

Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) placed 11th for Stonehill in the pole vault event. Olin cleared 9-08.00 feet to take 11th.

The Skyhawks return to action next Saturday when they participate in the Holy Cross Crusade at 11:00am.
