Stonehill Opens Outdoor Schedule At Bridgewater State


Junior Angelina Comei posted two top-three finishes for Stonehill

Skyhawks post six first place finishes in the non-scoring event

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (March 23, 2013) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team opened its outdoor season Saturday afternoon when it competed at the BSU Bears Invitational hosted by Bridgewater State University.

Junior sprinter Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), sophomore Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester), junior Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy),  junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill), junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen), and the 4x100 relay team all posted first place finishes in the first outdoor meet of the season.

Polakowski posted a first place finish in the 400-meter hurdles for the Skyhawks. The sprinter posted a time of 1:05.93 to beat the second place competitor by just under three seconds. Erin Carberry (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) earned second in the event with a 1:08.16, while Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) and Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) placed fifth and sixth. Polakowski also earned fifth place in the 100-meter dash, notching a time of 13.38 seconds.

Anderson registered first place in the 1500-meter race with a time of 4:50.07. The sophomore led a group of Skyhawks, with sophomore Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) earning seventh place (4:56.99) and Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) taking eighth (4:57.10).

Brittany Venturo took first place in the 5000-meter race. Her 18:58.87 time beat out four other Skyhawks who placed in the top eight. Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) took third place (19:28.33), Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) claimed fourth (19:42.58), while Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) and Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) placed sixth and seventh (19:57.49 & 19:57.52).

Comei posted two top-three finishes during the meet. Comei claimed first place in the high jump when she measured in at 5-01.80. The junior also took third place in the triple jump event when she earned a 33-05.57 jump. Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) also posted a top-eight finish in the triple jump, posting seventh place and measuring in at 30-08.50 feet.

Olin posted her first place finish in the pole vault event. Olin posted a vault of 9-04.20 to take to top pot.

Freshman Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) registered two top-four finishes, earning second in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Gray posted a 59.21 time in the 400 and a 27.18 time in the 200. Leanne Kent (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) took eighth in the 200 with a 1:04.99 time.

Sophomore Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) competed in the 800-meter event and took second place. Curit recorded a 2:24.78 in her first attempt at the 800 in her short career.

Next up for the Skyhawks is a trip to Duke University for the Duke Invitational on April 5th and 6th.
