Stonehill Earns Sixth Place at URI Coaches Tribute Meet

Maria Curit placed first in the 400-meter dash, sixth in the long jump, and first with the 4x400 relay.

Kingston, R.I (February 2, 2013) - The Stonehill Skyhawks women's track and field team finished sixth in the URI Coaches Tribute Meet Saturday, hosted by the University of Rhode Island.

Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine) and Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I.) led the way for the Skyhawks, placing first and second in the 400-meter dash. Curit timed-in at 58.52 seconds, beating her freshman teammate by five-hundredths of a second. Curit also placed sixth in the Long Jump event, measuring a jump of 17-02.25 feet.

Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass.) claimed another top-five finish for the Skyhawks when she placed fifth in the triple jump event. Comei recorded a 34-07.00 measurement, her second longest jump of the season.

Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn.) placed sixth overall and second among Division II competitors in the 800-meter run. Wilson posted a season-best time of 2:21.21 and earned three team points for the Skyhawks who finished with 47 points in the meet.

Junior Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass.) also earned a sixth place finish in the 3000-meter race. Regan clocked in at a career-best time of 10:46.93 to earn sixth and three more points for the Skyhawks. Regan broke her previous best 3000-meter time of 10:47.54 which she recorded at the UNH Tri-Meet on January 22, 2011.

Curit and Gray were also members of the 4x400 relay team that earned another first place finish for the Skyhawks. The team earned a time of 4:01.14, defeated the host Rhode Island squad by 41-hundredths of a second. Gray started it for the Skyhawks with a 59.5 leg, Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.Y.) followed with a 61.3 second leg, Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass.) earned a 61.9 second third leg, and Curit finished it with a 58.1 anchor leg.

Freshman Thrower Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass.) claimed her third top-three finish of the season when she finished third in the weight throw event. Thornton measured in at 51-03.75, just 11 inches short of her school-record mark.

Emily Regan recorded a sixth place finish in the 3000-meter race.

Stonehill also sent two runners to the Tufts Stampede meet at Tufts University. Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn.) and Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass.) competed in the 5000-meter run at the meet with Bishop claiming fourth (18:08.86) and Venturo earning ninth (19:11.21).

Other Stonehill Highlights:

Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass.) finished 16th and Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass.) placed 20th in the 60-meter dash. Egesi ran a 8.28 time, while Russo recorded an 8.37 time.

Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J.) registered a 12th place finish, while Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass.) earned 15th place in the 1000-meter race. Hellman timed in at 3:06.95 and Ulcena clocked in at 3:09.15.

Junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y.) collected a ninth place finish, measuring in at 9-02.25 feet in the pole vault.

Freshman Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I.) claimed 11th place in the triple jump. She measured in at 32 feet and 9.75 inches.

Sophomore Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn.) led six Stonehill runners in the mile. Anderson timed in at 5:17.61 while Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn.) finished 14th in 5:20.22, Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass.) followed in 16th (5:21.44), Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass.) claimed 17th (5:22.61), Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass.) earned 19th (5:22.97), while Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass.) captured 28th (5:34.69).

The Skyhawks return to action next week when they travel to Boston University for the BU Valentine Invitational on Friday. The team will also compete in the Tufts University "Quick" Invitational on Saturday.
