Stonehill Takes Third Place at URI Sorlien Invitational

Freshman Adrienne Thornton shattered her school-record and placed first in the weight throw.

Record-Breaking Day Earns Stonehill Track and Field Third Place

Kingston, R.I. (January 19, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's indoor track and field team broke three school records on its way to a third place finish at the URI Sorlien Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island.

Freshman Adrienne Thornton (Dorchester, Mass./John D. O'Bryant) placed first and shattered her old school record in the weight throw, measuring in at 52-05.50. The throw was just half-an-inch short of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Nationals. She posted her previous record throw (47-06.50) at the Reggie Poyau Invitational on December 7, 2012. Thornton also earned a seventh place finish in the shot put event.

Junior Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) broke her own school record, registering a 9-10.00 measurement during a fourth place finish in the pole vault. Olin broke her previous record (9-06.25) which she originally recorded at the Jay Carisella Invitational (12/3/11)

The 4x400 relay team, consisting of Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), Jordan Gray (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate), Jeana Esernio (Stony Brook, N.y./Ward Melville), and Katie Polakowski (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex)  captured first place with a school record time of 3:59.49. The team's victory was their second in three meets this season.

Curit also earned second place in the 400m dash. Her 59.02 time, finished just one tenth of a second behind the first place finisher. Polakowski finished fourth in qualifying and sixth in the finals during the 60m hurdles event, posting a 9.35 time in qualifying and a 9.41 time in the finals. Gray, a freshman sprinter, collected third place in the 500m dash (1:17.80).

Junior Meaghan Olin placed fourth and broke her own school record in the pole vault.

The 4x800 relay team also earned a top-three finish, placing second. Competing for the first time this season, the team made up of junior Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), junior Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica), senior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic), sophomore Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield), completed the relay in 10:00.85. LaRegina also placed sixth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:05.41.

Junior Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) measured a 16-01.75 jump to win the long jump event. Freshman Stephanie Fitzgerald (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) finished sixth overall with a 15-01.50 jump. Fitzgerald also added an eight place finish in the triple jump (33-01.75).

Junior Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) placed second overall in the 3000-meter run with a season-best time of 10:40.95. Junior Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) added an eight place finish (11:02.70) while sophomore Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) placed tenth (11:14.42).

Sophomore Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) led three Stonehill runners in the top 20 of the women's mile run. Wilson finished 15th at 5:29.95, Veit followed in 17th at 5:32.50, while freshman Molly Hellman (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) turned in a 5:41.82 performance for 19th place.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday when it competes at the Joe Donahue Games, hosted by Northeastern University, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Mass., at 3 p.m.
