Stonehill Posts Two All-New England Performances On Final Day Of New England Championships

Maria Curit placed in the top-ten in two events at the New England Championships posting a fifth place finish in the 400-meter run while ranking tenth overall in the long jump (yesterday).

Anderson places eighth in the 1,500-meter run, Curit finishes fifth in 400-meter run

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (May 12, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked fourth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional ratings index, placed 18th overall out of 35 teams in the conclusion of the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIAAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium on Saturday evening.

The University of Rhode Island (URI) finished first overall with 106 points, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) placed second overall (73), Vermont was third (59), UMass Amherst ranked fourth (48) and UMass Lowell finished fifth (46) to round out the top five. Stonehill placed 18th overall scoring 18 points in the three day meet.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) earned first career All-New England honors with her fifth place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of 56.92-seconds. Curit qualified for the finals of the event by running a time of 57.24-seconds in yesterday's prelims.

Classmate Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) finished eighth overall in the 1,500-meter run in 4:40.11 to collect first-career All-New England accolades. Senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) was 23rd overall in 4:51.25 while freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) placed 24th overall with a time of 4:52.47 and senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) ranked 25th overall in 4:53.12.

In the 800-meter run, senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) finished ninth overall with a time of 2:14.19 and freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) was tenth overall in 2:14.27. Sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) placed 16th with a time of 2:16.61.

Curit, Wilson, Alves and Carrier teamed up in the 4x800-meter relay to post a time of 9:29.42 which was good enough for ninth place overall.

Junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) placed 15th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase running a time of 11:54.70.

Stonehill will now await official word on who will represent the College at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by CSU-Pueblo at the Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colorado beginning on Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26.
