10,000-meter duo earns All-New England honors, McBride breaks school record in event

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (May 11, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked fourth in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional ratings index, checks in at eighth overall after day two of the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIAAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium on Friday.
Stonehill has earned 13 points to rank second among all NCAA Division II programs at the meet and eighth overall. The Skyhawks posted two All-New England performances and broke two school records on the second day of the event. UMass Amherst is currently first in the point standings with 22. Tufts, the University of New Hampshire, Middlebury and Southern Connecticut State University are all tied for second with 18 points while Williams is sixth (14.50) and Sacred Heart is seventh (14).
Junior Caroline McBride (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) placed second overall in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:31.77 shattering the school record in the event. McBride earns All-New England honors for the first time in her career by breaking her previous program best of 37:40.01 which she set at the Skyhawk Invitational on April 14 earlier this season.
Senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) also collected All-New England honors in the 10,000-meter run posting a time of 37:48.31 for fourth place overall. Mahoney picks up her second-career All-New England honor (outdoors) in the 10,000-meter run after finishing eighth overall at the 2011 championships in 38:16.17.
Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) placed tenth overall in the long jump with a leap of 17-feet and 2.25-inches. In the 400-meter dash, Curit advanced to the finals of the event running a time of 57.24-seconds – the fifth fastest time in the prelims.
Junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) eclipsed her school record mark in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.91-seconds in the prelims. Bernazzani, who did not advance to the finals with the tenth fastest time of the day (top eight advance), broke the previous school record of 15.03-seconds set at the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) Outdoor Championships at Jess Dow Field on the campus of Southern Connecticut.
Classmate Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) ran a time of 15.91-seconds in the 100-meter hurdle prelims for 24th place overall.
In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Chelsea Bishop (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) finished 13th overall with a time of 18:24.55. Freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) placed 14th in 18:24.77 and sophomore Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) was 23rd in 18:48.35.
Freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) posted a 22nd place finish in the 400-meter hurdle prelims running a time 1:06.08.
The final day of the New England Championships gets underway tomorrow at MIT's Steinbrenner Stadium at noon.
