Stonehill Places Third At NE-10 Outdoor Championships

Skyhawks score 126 points behind five NE-10 All Conference performances

EASTON, Mass. (May 5, 2012) – The Stonehill College women's track and field team, ranked fourth overall in this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Regional ratings index, finished third overall at the 2012 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Track and Field Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University, scoring 126 points at the conclusion of the two day event at Jess Dow Field this evening.

UMass Lowell ousted the two-time defending champion Southern Connecticut State University Owls by a score of 189-180 while Stonehill ranked third overall with 126 points. American International College finished fourth overall with 86 points and the University of New Haven Chargers rounded out the top-five scoring 79 points.

Stonehill collected five NE-10 All-Conference performances, had three school records broken (one tied), established one new meet record and saw one student-athlete provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Senior Christen Carrier (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) finished second overall in 800-meter run with a time 2:13.85 to earn NE-10 All-Conference honors. Carrier also broke her own school record of 2:14.35, which she set on May 8, 2010 at the New England Championships, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II championship meet later this month.

Freshman Sarah Wilson (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) placed third overall in the event with a time of 2:14.61 and sophomore Elizabeth LaRegina (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ranked fourth overall in 2:15.48., both personal best times respectively. Freshman Erin Rielly (Burlington, Mass./Burlington) finished seventh overall in 2:20.78 scoring a point for the Skyhawks and tying her personal best mark, outdoors, this season. Sophomore Melissa Ulcena (Billerica, Mass./Billerica) was 12th overall in 2:25.80.

Freshman Maria Curit (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) shattered her school record in the 400-meter run with a first place finish in 56.58-seconds. Curit, who earns NE-10 All-Conference honors with her performance, broke her previous mark of 57.58-seconds set on April 14 at the Skyhawk Invitational.

Curit, Carrier and Wilson teamed up with senior Jill Alves (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) in the 4x400-meter relay placing third overall in the event with a time of 3:54.44.

Junior Kristen Veit (Easthampton, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) successfully defended her title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:13.82. Veit collects her second-career NE-10 All-Conference honor in the event after placing first overall in last season's outdoor championships with a time of 11:37.45.

Freshman Emily Anderson (Manchester, Conn./Manchester), Rielly, senior Maura Ferrarini (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and LaRegina captured first place honors in the 4x800-meter relay breaking the meet record time in 9:24.99. Stonehill broke its own record in the event as the Skyhawks previous high-water mark was 9:40.42 set during the 2009 NE-10 Outdoor Championships.

In the 1,500-meter run, Anderson finished third overall with a personal best time of 4:40.04 while Alves checked in at fifth (4:43.96), freshman Brianna Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) was eighth overall (4:50.04), Ferrarini placed ninth (4:52.22) and sophomore Sarah Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) was 13th overall (5:02.11).

 

Senior Kristen Mahoney (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) earned NE-10 All-Conference honors in the 5,000-meter run with a second place finish in 18:04.53. Freshman Brittany Venturo (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) ranked fourth overall in 18:22.03 and sophomore Emily Regan (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished eighth overall in 18:59.60.

Junior Katie Bernazzani (Norwood, Mass./Norwood) broke her own school record in the 100-meter hurdle finals posting a fourth place finish in 15.03-seconds. Bernazzani's previous mark was 15.20-seconds which she set at the 2011 New England Championships, also hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. Bernazzani qualified for the finals yesterday with a time of 15.49-seconds.

Sophomore Meaghan Olin (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen) tied her school record in the pole vault by clearing 9-feet and 6.25-inches for third place overall.

Classmate Angelina Comei (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) ranked sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 34-feet and 9.50-inches.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Lauren Hanlon (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) finished seventh overall in 1:06.87 while junior Sarah Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass/Dennis-Yarmouth) placed ninth in 1:08.19.

Bernazzani and Comei teamed up with freshman Christina Russo (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and sophomore Amanda Egesi (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) for a sixth place finish in the 4x100-meter relay in 50.82-seconds. Russo also competed in the 200-meter dashing posting a time of 27.39-seconds (18th overall).

Stonehill returns to action on Thursday, May 10 at the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by MIT at Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium in Cambridge, Mass.
